But I don't deny that Olivia could fall in love with the image of that one who saved her life once...
It happens sometimes in real life - when someone does something very, very special for you, for example, saves your life, it can never be forgotten. And if you're just a child, you're most likely to select your One And Only in that way he/she can remind you that person who causes such a special heat in your heart. It is normal.
I must also say that Olivia is about 14-15 years old in this pic.
Don't forget that at the beginning of the 20th century people matured earlier than now. But there were no so-called "teenagers". Therefore here Olivia is not little girl, not yet a woman. And it seems to grieve Basil so much. He has mixed feelings, he doesn't what to feel anything like that.
But he is waiting.
He has been waiting for so long...
He has to wait so a little...
And, I think, this fact hurts him even more...

I have princess she is..17//18/19 in my story she falls in love someone is late 30s to early 40s. Her court alchemist, and they call him pedo or creeper! For one this takes place in dark ages. (And I like older men.XD)
And I do have Victorian tale of other woman who falls in love with her " uncle" he is not by blood just a family friend, who has become like family and he help rise her. And she is 17 and he is about in his 40s to. He playfully is perverted with her. He as odd sense of humor but he is harmless. And being one of four horseman (the girl he likes this his ' brother' Death's daughter) HE WILL FOREVER be to old for her lol. She's still trapped in her mortal years of 17..
But by two original couples
- The dark ages princess and her Alchemist
-Death's daughter and her ' uncle' get attacked for being pedos! Also Death's daughter and her ' uncle' are dubbed as promoting incest. When am all "if your going to attack my story first read it! HE IS NOT HER REAL UNCLE"
So I understand.. How some people may be all 'YOU PEDO!" They don't understand certain society rules back then..like it seems we do..
Plus, just throwing this out there..My characters are 17-19. I don't see that being pedo bait in our current era either. I mean don't have sex with the girl..but if 17 girl is flirting with her teacher, in sweet innocent way, he can be nice and sweet on her play teacher's pet. To make her feel good, Its called being gentleman. But today, they would dub him a PEDO! >_< I had a crush on teacher, who looking back on it, I realized he knew. And he was so nice to me, and give me random earns to make me feel happy and good, like I was helping him out. He encouraged me to do great things and lifted me up..and when boys picked on me, or who one hurt me (when I though he liked me but used me) he laid into him, and scared him. You know..he also said he never had daughter..he wished he did. "I Know how boys suck..." he told me.

You're right. In 19th and 20th century teen girls were as mature women. In the Middle Ages, too.
For example, H. Sienkiewicz's book "W pustyni i w puszczy". Nel is 8-aged girl and Stanisław is 14-aged boy.
When he saved her life they got married after a few years.
