A Zaresian Imperial Courier making a visit to a remote outpost on the southeastern edge of the Empire.

Over a thousand years ago, this fortress was part of a great city that sat astride a rich trade route leading inland to a distant, wealthy, and powerful inland nation. As centuries passed, the Great Inland Wastes, a legacy of the conflict that ended the previous Age, expanded and swallowed the caravan route, cutting off all contact between the lands around the Tethys Sea and the inner parts of the continent. When skystones were harnessed and skyships created, some thought to seek out those lands of old, whose riches had become the stuff of legends. Alas, it was soon found that the skies above the Wastes were densely riddled with what are known as Dead Zones, where skystone ceases to function; exploration and expansion to the East is virtually impossible, whether by land or air. Trade has been established with distant inland nations again, but between Waste and high mountains, ships must fly thousands of kilometres out of their way to reach their destinations.
