Thanks!! I can't say I like them anymore (as I think I could do a lot better now) but I'm glad they still look okay.

Oh my gosh, that's breathtaking. All the clouds... Everything is amazing! It's nice to see some pencil work in the midst of everything that's digital nowadays.
This is random, but I love your avatar ^^

This is a very amazing piece of work. In all honesty? I think the stones impress me the most. Maybe because stone is so hard to get right and have it look natural. The shading and depth on this is completely astounding, and that crystal ball has a really nice shine to it. And the clouds... My gosh, they must have been tedious to shade. This picture speaks worlds of work and effort. It's always great to see someone who obviously cares so much about what they do.

Thanks for the extensive comment! I appreciate it.

The clouds probably did take a lot of time, but it was a long while ago and I don't really remember if it was tedious or not. Probably.

And I'm glad you like the rocks; those are actually my least favourite part of the pic, so it's always good to know that they're not total rubbish.

There's just something about this picture that makes me want to stare at it all day. The whole drawing is amazing, but I think it's the texture and the shading that really make it click. Excellent job.

Amarynceus In reply to JadeGL [2006-02-09 05:51:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I think I'm going to redraw this one in ink for an entry to that "Imagine 2006" thingy as I don't have any fantasy pieces from the last year ;_;.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JadeGL In reply to Amarynceus [2006-02-09 14:02:01 +0000 UTC]

That's not so necesary, for what I saw and read they don't care for the year, they prefer to show stuff about new artist, you can always ask Imagine about it anyway.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Amarynceus In reply to JadeGL [2006-02-10 01:36:45 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... the attachments that Ben Hunter sent me don't mention anything about the year, but in the body of the email itself it says "Each artist may submit up to 4 works, each of which must have been completed within the prior year. " I'd like to do some new stuff at any rate.

Good luck with submitting to them if you do! I think you have a good chance with your work.

JadeGL In reply to Amarynceus [2006-02-10 02:37:44 +0000 UTC]

Doing new stuff sounds pretty reasonable.
And thanks, I'm still thinking about it, luck to you too and I think you have a very good oportunity to be, cause I was looking to the submissions that are at the moment and yours looks better than most.

I don't think I need to explain why I knew I was going to like this one even from the small small thumb! What I did NOT know is that is was going to be so awesome! You make details so crisp and the shading is dead on. I am so jealous. Maybe if I keep drawing a lot, I'll get as good as you one day, I just hope I won't die of old age before that day arrives.

OpalGryphon [2006-01-22 03:49:31 +0000 UTC]

He's gorgeous! I can't say anything negative about it at all. The lighting/shadows plus the scales being in perspective gives him real deapth and make him almost pop off the page.

I have to ask...is there a reason you use smooth paper? I've been told that I should use paper with more "tooth" but I hate the way it blends, and the tooth makes for a drawing with odd texture. So I ignored the peanut gallery and stuck with smooth paper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Amarynceus In reply to OpalGryphon [2006-01-22 04:13:15 +0000 UTC]

I too hate to fight tooth. I work with tight linework most of the time so any imperfection in the surface of the paper drives me nuts.

A certain amount of tooth, however, is needed for smooth shading blends. Hot press, for example, can be not so hot for doing graphite work as the graphite smears rather than blends.

Basically, use whatever texture/surface suits your technique and tell anybody who says otherwise to go **** themselves!

Unless they've got a convincing argument to back their opinions up, of course.
