You should play the earlier games. At least FF6. (Looks at game list again) Whaddaya mean...you haven't played FF9? Why does everyone skip 9? You can't judge a game by it's cover! It was my favorite of the PSX batch.

Because there were ugly people on the cover. That's why I initially skipped it. The cover art is HORRIBLE! And quite frankly, so are the characters. However, the gameplay tried to go back to the old school style (another thing most FF7 convertees didn't recognize). It did very well with the Japanese audience, but in America, the high majority never played an FF game before 7, and saw 9 as something foreign and different than what they had come to expect from 7 and 8.
Plus the card game in 9 sucked so bad...
Oh, well! FF12, the first REAL FF game since X, comes out in four months!!!

7 was dummied up and dead simple. Materia makes your character's HP go down while MP go up(except for HP materia). I had a character late in the game down to 10 HP once just from materia.
8 was in a since revolutionary, like the Soviet Revolution...no armor, no accessories, just junction. Pretty cool once you get the hang of it, but where's my armor?
10...wow. Now THAT was something else. The whole sphere grid was pretty cool, except I took a wrong turn with Khimari and he was developing the same skills as Rikku and becoming a real wuss. But the in battle party switching was badass. And you had armor, weapon and acessory, and could even do some basic 'forging.' Ten had the best set up in my opinion. A little too much for the less than careful leveler, but the only way it really could have been made better is more armor selections...like shield, body, helmet, and TWO accessories (like in FF6).
I played FFX-2 for fifteen minutes and realized I had wasted $50. For an indepth critique for X-2, talk to my wife.
Oh, did I mention the characters (14 playable) for FF6 were much more interesting? The designs have been horribly bland for 7, 8 and even 9. Ten had a few good character designs.

Well in all honesty I like each of the FF games I've played for different reasons. But I have to disagree with you on X-2..... I loved it!! Probably cause it was a girl power game LOL I'm not too picky when it comes to the way the games are set up either, I just really like the stories. Oh and did you hear that all of the FF games are connected in some way? (including the two movies too) FFX and X-2 actually come before 7 in the storyline

Well i heard it from a friend of mine who has a friend that's a liason between Square US and Square Japan. Apparently they are trying to keep it under wraps until FF13 comes out, but he said that all the FF stories take place on the same planet and are related in one way or another. Example: Shinra Company in FF7 was named after the Shinra kid in FFX-2.... remember he discovered the energy in the Farplane and said it could be used as a power source. I know that the world maps are all slightly different, but the stories are supposed to take place several thousand years apart. If you think about it a bit it makes sense. I mean there are chocobos in every FF game, there are spirits that can be summoned or called in most of them as well. I was talking about it with my friend and we came to the conclusion that it made a lot of sense that they were all related.

I'll bet that Square's just pulling that part outta it's ass. Hmm...they'd probably have to make FF6 the last one because the whole face of the earth is rearranged.
DEFINATELY borrow FF6 from your friend! Don't worry about 5. It sucked. Boring as all hell. FF4 wasn't too bad, actually, but it was horribly short and numbingly simple. And if you do get around to FF6, make sure you get a walkthrough and get all 14 characters. You can get 12 at first. Then when the catastrophy happens, you're left with only one and have to find your 11 friends, then find the other two.
