Description I owed a friend a picture and I wanted to practice my pencil, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone..

Used my friend's picture which I used as a reference...
this is the closest I can get to the actual place [link]

Still working out a lot of things, so several things are different...plus towards the end I was tired and dying to do something else...

Thanks for viewing

Thank kindly for your critique. I liked the angle very much too for the reasons you mentioned, but I can't take credit for it, as that was the original angle from my friend's photo on Facebook (its friend's locked, so I can't link it).

The ripples were definitely challenging, but once I got the rhythm, it was a matter of avoiding the white areas of the light reflection. What I found to be the most challenging was the foliage, because again this was negative shading of the area without the leaves.. and the leaves were minuscule..

i saw this one while i was mostly inactive and i faved it time ago, yet i never commented, i love the feeling of this, and i have a soft spot for scenery/environment sketched in pencil, the way you draw water is very realistic, impressive, it's so hard to make..and i love the atmosphere!

Thank you for the lovely comment Β

I just love pencil too.. but it takes longer time and more care.. which in a way is good training for focus and concentration.. but I really have to set time aside to do it. Still, I would love to do another one too... but I haven't found a suitable reference yet...Β

I got the idea of how to do the water from another artists work on Gandalf's beard Β

really? interesting, water is something hard to draw for me, in pencil, watercolour or w/t..
also i understand you, even after all this years i am very SLOW in drawing anything... i guess you now are faster with digital brushes, but i am slow with any kind of technique i chose to use.. i wish i was faster..also in this year i have focus my attention on writing my story because i am planning to make a comic (kind of like the jane eyre one, just with words) so i have been sketching but not manage to draw as many complete artwork as i wish..anyway sorry for ranting ahah
i hope you'll find soon some picture that will inspire you for making something new

I find that being slow and taking time really shows... I can tell from my works and I can tell from others too, digital or otherwise.Β And being slow allows time to gather your thoughts, make the piece more meaningful. And that's what I love about your works. So much emotions that youΒ just cannot give words to. So don't fret about the number of completed artworks. Quality works takes time and they last.Β

I am really happy and proud that you are attempting a comic, I know with God's blessings you will succeed. There have always been such a wealth of meaning in your works. I look forward to see it to the completion.Β

Don't worry about the rant, if you can even call it that. I've written and read longer ones.. somethings worth saying are worth saying well, right

Yup, amen to that.. and to your success

I agree, i know some artists are both fast and very good and i think they manage to be so fast from experience and practice, yet maybe is also something that depend on each of us ..from our character, i am a slow persona in general not only in drawing....but i am so glad and happy you see so many things in my drawing, i think lot of this depends on your sensibility but your words make me feel so happy i can't explain,Β i am going to keep this comment forever and re-read itΒ every time i feel discouraged. The comic will have the same story of all the illustrations i keep posting from years, i just i decided to try to make it in a comic instead of a book.. it will take longer probably, but i decided to fight all my fears of failing and try!

You have no idea how you words make me feel better..thank you really Amie! Β  Β

Sorry I haven't been able to reply earlier... you're not the only one who is slow... I agonize frequently that despite using mostly digital, I can't be as fast as some people.. and yes I agree with all that you said, about the experience, practice and character... maybe we're kindred spirits in that way Β

I'm glad what I said made you happy... I have nothing to add except that I started to differentiate those qualities when I was feeling down and started to compare speed paints with slower works. Β That being said, I still wish to be faster.. maybe its a case of seeing the grass is greener on the other side..Β

I am really happy that you are consciously fighting your fears of failing. You'll grow stronger for it, no matter what the end result. I'll be cheering you on and you will be my motivation to fight my own fears.Β

Likewise, I am happy to have made a small difference for someone wonderful.Β

p.s I think I've abused the word 'happy' a bit much this time...Β Β but you can insert a more superlative positive emotion in its place and it'll but just as true Β Its been a tiring day and I just can't think of any at the moment...Β

don't be sorry, take your time for replying when you feel like, don't feel pressured with me.
yes we are, and i agree with you, i have learn that personally, for the way i am, trying to be faster just for the sake of being more productive isn't for me, i am fast sketcher but when i start with ink, colors etc i need my time..and i learned that is okay that way, that every one of us have a different way of working, and no one is better, we are just different, this help me a lot to not be discouraged and learn to love what i do for what it is, isn't easy though..
yes we need to fight our fears and work on the things we love without being scared to fail..i also recently read an article about artist and failure, about how failing help to improved..so i am trying to think that whatever i do will eventually help me to improve..but yes, easy to say..Β

also i read you hurt your knees or something? Β Β i hope you are fine now..

Oh, don't worry about pressuring me It's just sometimes I have to put put things down quickly before I forget what I want to say.. that's more important than forgotten words

Yup, accepting ourselves just the way we are are one of the most important things we can do for ourselves. Sometimes others expectations are a barrier, but often we find that we are the biggest barriers. It's not easy, especially when you do actually need a certain pressure to improve; we just need to find balance and our realisation helps. Β But that's just life. Its the hardship that sometimes teaches us the meaning in life. Scary.. but I wouldn't have it any other way I suppose.Β

Hmm.. my knees.. I think its my body telling me I need to do pay attention to it. Its wear and tear after all those games and sports and not taking care of my weight. It's not to bad now but I still needΒ
to explore options because lack of physical activity is making me sluggish

yes, life is all like this: sacrifice, hard work, and taking the good from all the little things we have, trying to not take them as guaranteed because nothing really is. And yes, in life like in our "job" (passion/hobby etc) is only through experience that we learn..no book or manual can teach how to live..ahaha how we end up talking about this? AhAh sorry, i feel so old!

ugh i know what you mean, if i don't take my morning walk/run i feel always physically bad..so hurting your knees and being forced to stay put must be hard :/ i didn't knew you did a lot of sport, i hope you'll feel better soon, really!

but, sorry i hope i am not being too intrusive, the problem with your knees is permanent?

PenWandering [2011-06-06 01:48:53 +0000 UTC]

Wow. From the first look, I'd thought the falls would be the dominant landscape feature - kind of like looking at Niagara - but the rock wall of the canyon it is flowing through suddenly gives a different perspective. You realize that what you don't see is bigger than the obviously large feature here. The square-ish features in the wall remind me of Anasazi cliff dwellings, excet that this would be too low on the wall for them. And I doubt they would have had this much water flowing past them. Then again, the desert might have been wetter in their time.

This is another great piece of work. You seem to excel in whatever medium you use. You are awesome.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

amie689 In reply to PenWandering [2011-06-06 10:35:53 +0000 UTC]

I'm wasn't sure of how the big the actual 'falls' is and just looked it up.. [link] its actually just like a small dam across Almond river, but the angle and composition of my friends photo made it look larger, and the square-ish features are probable left over from the olden days.. not sure what purpose they served

Thank you for the kind words It might be a trifle exaggeration, since I'm a lousy watercolorist. Pencil is my first media, since I started drawing the moment I could hold it properly The biggest problem I had was (still do,I think) is patience
