Description Obligatory disclaimer: I don't hate Ashley. The girl does kick ass. I just wasn't aware of all her oddities until I accidentally romanced her with Max Shepard.
Her constant quoting of poetry did get old real quick.

Heheh, I get the poetry bit. Though I do find it odd how everyone seems to poke fun at Ashley for being religious and not Thane, or Mordin, or Liara.

She's more open about it.
Plus the others have other things to be teased about. XD
Such as Mordin being ALITTLECREEPY for such an old fart.

I noticed the same stuff. Between the initial "RAR Aliens" and the "u r bein polite and frendly that meanz we r solmates" stuff...I get that she's more complex than that, but she still rubbed me the wrong way. I left her behind on Virmire, partially for the aforementioned issues and partially because I was already a Soldier and Kaidan seemed more appealing as a character to me (despite winning the "Blandest Character Appearance in the Galaxy" award).

Jack had a similar problem with my MaleShep. Being Paragon and just talking to her made her think I was "interested". Of course, you can tell her you're not interested like with Liara, but she just sounds so sad when you do, so I generally never talk to her more than once after her loyalty mission (though ignoring her like that makes me kinda sad too...).

Yeah, I rom'd Jack with my boy scout, which was weird haha XD

Talking to Ashley as fem Shep helped me understand her more (now I usually sacrifice Kaidan just because I'd feel bad for Ash's sisters).

Proud Ashaholic I'm an Army Brat with three generations of family in the military, (ROTC for myself in a few months) Plus, Liberal Arts University student, so I love poetry. The sound of her quoting Tennyson produced...certain manly reactions.

Loved the comic, great drawing style.

Actually didn't have trouble with the Mako on Ilos... only everywhere else I had to drive it. Terrain in general on most worlds is a pain in the neck.

The actual plot centric worlds don't have that.

The Virmire decision... not an easy one to make. I left Kaidan so come ME2 I'm faced with an distrustful and suspicious Ashley. I'd imagine if I went the other way then Kaidan would be more suspicious.

The import ability makes plot consequences more interesting to me.

Again very funny comic.

amiko16 In reply to Knight-Watcher [2010-12-04 02:07:25 +0000 UTC]

The first time I was on Virmire, I must've sat there for five minutes going "Oh gooodddd why can't I save them booooothh??" ;_;
I tend to leave Ashley behind most of the time just because Kaidan's more useful with his biotics.

My problem with the mako on Ilos was the last stretch-- I tended to get killed by all the geth before I could reach the conduit.
Though driving vertically up mountains in an attempt to reach areas on random planets was frustrating lol

thanks :>

Knight-Watcher In reply to amiko16 [2010-12-04 03:55:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes... there's a similar to decision to that in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1. Mephisto's 'son' Blackheart has Jean Grey and Nightcrawler in cages. After you defeat him and take the key... you have to decide which one plunges into the Infinity Vortex.

Both try to persuade you to save the other. The post-game consequences of this decision didn't crossover in MUA2. That makes it different from the importing consequences between Mass Effect games. That's what made ME2 clever... all your first game decisions either prove to be a good thing or in some cases a bad thing.

Jean Grey will resurrect as the Phoenix in search of vengeance and Mystique will murder Xavier in his sleep for allowing her son to die. Both are bad in some respects... though I think letting Nightcrawler die has a more lasting consequence... he stays dead and Mystique's murder of Xavier ends the X-Men.

I barely made it through the Conduit on Ilos both times that I have played so far. Likewise I repeatedly get shot up in the Mako... well if you barge right into the line of fire on say a Geth Colossus backed up by rocket troopers and that other unit that's slightly smaller than a Colossus. Yep it killed me more than once doing that.

Also the terrain on random worlds likewise was frustrating for me. Somehow I got flipped over more than once tumbling down the mountain side.

Typically I always make Paragon decisions... though occasionally I will end up with Renegade points for something or other.

Giving Shadow Broker... the Cerberus files for one. The first time I refused to give it to him. The second time I figured aw what the heck.

The second time I customized the look of Shepard. Of course I decided to go around saving the galaxy as Jane Shepard instead of John Shepard. So I tried both being the leading man and the leading lady. I did the same thing with Knights of the Old Republic and The Sith Lords.

The three way romance show down in the conference room is more or less the same either way.

As romances go in these kinds of games, I find the more developed the romantic interests are... the more enjoyable the whole experience is. The crew in general felt very well written.

I do realize that Raphael Sbarge and Jennifer Hale were both previously in KOTOR and The Sith Lords as Carth Onasi and Bastila Shan. Actually saw someone do a crossover art where you have Carth dressed like Kaidan and Jennifer Hale dressed like Shepard.

I got charm high enough to convince Saren he's been compromised by Sovereign. The results were unexpected... he blew his own brains out only for Sovereign to assume full control over his corpse.

As boss battles, that was actually kind of easy when you skip one round by persuading or tricking the enemy into doing something that harms them.

Similarly in every BioWare game I have played so far... just about everyone is trying to kill you or doesn't trust you... except for the people on your ship.

*Sigh*
You know, despite what the bad spelling youtube commentors who probably haven't washed in their whole life span might proclaim between incoherent swears and wiping spilled Monster energy drink from their keyboards would have you believe, Ashley really is all that racist.

Seriously, at most she is hesitant about trusting alien foreign powers because she's cynical of the idea that they care about the human race in the long term and given her family's history in the first contact war and her lack of experience working with them, that's the reason for her apparent 'xenophobia'.

That said, she can actually work quite comfortably with the Salarian team on Virmire, she even happily volunteers for the job. She also at one point expresses to Tali that she hopes for improves relations with Humans and Quarians. Plus she rather openly despises Terra Firma and continues to do so regardless of whether Shepard supports them or not (in fact if you go full renegade she even becomes defensive of aliens). She also maintains that she doesn't think humanity is 'superior' to other races.
Plus, she can actually be pursuaded (through a long conversation) to try and be more open minded about working with aliens in the future. Leading her to being the most paragon member of the team, that magical thing called 'character development' and 'flawed characters' that everyone claims to demand in video games and then when they get it they shout that the characters aren't likable.

Basically the whole 'Ashley is da racist' is really the by product of total overreaction on the part of the gaming community and truth be told, I always feel a little more cynical everytime I hear about it.

Also, Ashley mentions believing in god ONCE. In the entire course of what amounts to a potential thirty hour game, Ashley mentions it ONCE. For two minutes, and she doesn't rub your face in it, or demand you accept it as the only truth in the universe or even go into much detail about what her beliefs are save for that she happens to believe in god.
Truth be told, when I see people get all mad about how she is a 'religious god nut' because of that and then claim to hate her because she's so 'bigotted' I laugh bitterly.

As for the poetry, eh, it didn't bother me. I would prefer to listen to Walt Whitman or Alfred Tennyson then I would listen to Liara or Tali nervously telling me how amazing I am and how happy they are to let me take their precious virginity. But that's just me.

I will read your whole comment once I've been up more than a couple of hours, but basically my response will still boil down to:
This comic isn't a hate-fest, it's a parody; it's meant to inflate someone's oddities. Even when I like a character, I'm still not above making fun of them.

I've seen comics that blatantly and harshly degrade characters I like, so I can kind of understand the knee-jerk reaction.

I actually REALLY hated Ashley my first play-through. The second time I went through the game though I bothered getting to know her, and I felt really guilty about how my leaving her on Virmire the first time was solely out of spite.

I still left her the second time but that was because I had to weigh the consequences. Unfortunately she's just a soldier and because of her lack of diversity I had to choose the biotic....that and it seemed like a really good way for her to redeem the family name. Too bad Alenko isn't better written....I wouldn't feel so dirty saving him.

I did try to romance him, buuuuut his character just wasn't written very well and though all the other characters in ME1 didn't have many convo lines, his just didn't show enough of who he was as a person other than: He really thinks Shepard is awesome, he really likes to talk about regs.

Honestly I spent alot more time just hanging 'round the mako...hehe.

He's a cutie in his awkward adoration, but not much is really said about him aside from his loyalty to the Alliance and his crappy past with Brain Camp.

OGOD THE MAKO so glad that wasn't in ME2 lol
