Part of my exhibition JΓ€rvineidot (Lakemaidens) on summer 2013. My idea for the works was to picture Finnish fish as mermaids. This one's a common roach (sΓ€rki).Related content

Although this one does not have quite as much an interesting quality as your other piece does, I still applaud you for the great effort on combining the fish and the figure. I really do like the background here; really does feel like a cold night out on a lake, but I would much rather treat the background on its own; I think you struggled a little combining the digital medium and traditional here, because the two mediums are easily recognizable. I know you were probably trying to create a sense of contrast by making the mermaid's 'supernatural' appearance with bright blue hair and red eyes, but unfortunately I think you pushed it just a wee little too much.
Otherwise, though, I think this series was really interesting and your improvement really shows through. :3

The red (or orange) eyes are actually a natural feature of common roach. But as for the hair... I tried to get many different hair colors, but maybe a more dimmed blue would have worked better here.

Not necessarily hide, but putting two different mediums together so that they synchronise is also difficult.
Ah okay, I didn't know about the eyes. But yeah the blue is a little intense.

Somehow the background in this is nostalgic to me, it's very magical and for me, "Nightwish-like",Β it grabbed my attention quickly.
You made the mermaid stand out well against the background even though they share similar colours and the idea of basing them on real fish is interesting. And in that other picture of the perch, I liked how there were icicles on her tail.

All the mermaids (except on the temptation) are actually hand drawn and the backgrounds done digitally. I tried to blend them together as much as possible, but that must be the reason the characters still stand out.
