I like the idea of many possible alternate universes, so here is a picture of my RPG character Karina after a mishap in an alternate universe.

Although foolproof birth control is available in Karina's distant future, the Imperial Scout Service isn't above saving a few credits with less foolproof birth control for scouts like Karina (who was raised as a poor orphan and couldn't afford a fancy birth control implant). Unwanted pregnancies are thus an occasional complication for Karina, but usually she has time to reach a starport within a few weeks and donate her embryo to a gene vendor. (As an alternative to abortion, a gene vendor would remove the embryo for a fee and then store the embryo until another woman (who can't have a baby of her own) purchases the embryo and writes over its DNA with that of herself and her partner.) But here the thriftiness of the Scout Service has screwed 24-year old Karina two different ways: not only has her contraceptive failed, but the hyperdrive of her one-person scoutship (equipped with a bargain-quality jump coil) has malfunctioned and hurled her deep into uncharted space, before crapping out and leaving her stranded years away from the nearest starport.

Fortunately for Karina, though, she has - after eight months of work - managed to fix her hyperdrive, and here (40 weeks along) she can be seen making some last-minute adjustments before testing the engine. Then, with any luck, she will reach a friendly starport within a month or so, with one more passenger than she had when she left the Imperium.
