Description Another thing I've been picking away at in my free time - an interpretation of the Each Uisge from Scottish folklore. I was thinking of the first story I ever heard about this creature, which involved several children climbing onto its back at once. Only the last child noticed that the horse's back lengthened to accomodate all of the riders and refused to ride, sparing himself the fate of the other children, whom the creature drowned in the loch and devoured.

Done in Photoshop.

It's like a horse/caterpillar/dragon. Very interesting concept, and very believable anatomy! You've done exceptionally well.

isnt this almost exactly like the kelipe and the scandinavian Nyk? exept that its body lengthen

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ammonite-Amy In reply to Rans-green-moon [2012-05-15 23:02:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they're almost identical - the distinction seems to be that the kelpie lives mostly in rivers and streams, while the each uisge lives in the sea or in lochs. I've also read that the each uisge is meant to be a more vicious version of the kelpie, but the details of how they behave in the stories seem very similar. The lengthening body thing doesn't often show up in the tales (or at least in the ones I've come across) but that detail in particular just stuck in my brain.

Ammonite-Amy In reply to patchesofheaven74 [2012-05-15 22:58:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah - from what I've read the distinction seems to be that kelpies inhabit rivers and streams, while each uisges live in the sea and in lochs. But the details about their appearance and how they lure and trap their prey are almost identical.
