Description The dark black of what seemed would be the middle of the night clouded my windows. The whole outside world was quiet, except for the occasional hoot of the Barred Owl that lived in the tree outside my window. The slow creek of the back door reached my ears. I knew someone had entered the house. I knew who it was, though. About five seconds after I herd the back door, my bedroom door opened, Echo snuck in. “Hey, Mads, What’s new” His golden eyes never left me from the time he entered the room to when he leaped onto my bed and grabbed the book of the bedside table.
“New book?” he asked. He always took interest in what I was reading.
“Yeah, Maddy gave lent me that one in exchange for the last book.”
“I thought that book belonged to Lauren.”
“It does, but Maddy was next in line to borrow it.” Echo flipped the book to the first page. “You’re kidding, another vampire book?”
“It’s the second of the series.”
“Ok then. Just don’t make anymore comparisons of me to that Edward guy.”
“I won’t, don’t worry!” I laughed; making sure no one else in my household had heard me. Echo has been my boyfriend for the past week now. My family doesn’t know about him, or the fact that he practically lives here. “Echo, are you staying tonight?” I asked him. My eyes not leaving the computer screen. I often had conversations over the computer with my friends at this time of night. “Of course I’m staying. What else would I do all night?” Echo is vampire. And he didn’t mind that it wasn’t a secret. None of them had seen him before though. I drew a picture of Echo the night before, and put it up on my website for all of my school friends to see. Most of their responses described him as “hot”. “Who are you talking to?” he asked with a soft voice as he walked over to the computer.
“Just some friends” Echo had bitten me the night I met him. It wasn’t severe. Just got a tiny bit of the venom into my blood stream so technically, I’m a vampire too. I still look like I did before I was bitten, just my blue eyes in mixture with the yellow vampire eyes, have turned by eyes a soft green. I also sleep, but not as much as I used to.
“Maddy, its getting to be midnight. You should really try to sleep.”
“It’s not my fault that I don’t sleep as much, and you don’t sleep at all.” Vampires don’t ever sleep. “Hey, Echo, how was your ‘dinner’” I lifted my hands of the keyboard for a second for my air quotations.
“It was good,” he smiled “I am doing a public service, getting rid of all those coyotes in your neighborhood.” Our neighborhood had a slight coyote problem. They’ve been eating all the cats.
“Are you tired yet?” Echo whined with impatience.
“Fine, I’ll sleep” I said goodbye to my friends and grabbed my pajamas and on my way to the bathroom to change and brush my teeth. When I came back, Echo was sitting on my bed again. He got up and let me get into the bed. He pulled the sheets over me, and sat back down. He ran his long, cold fingers through my hair. Echo lay down next to me and sighed.
“Are you asleep yet?” He coolly whispered in my ear.
“You can’t rush a half-vampire” that made him smile. I sleep on my side facing the wall, so Echo draped his arm over my waist to hold my hands.
“Are you purring?” I asked him, his throat was emitting a murmuring noise, like a cat would make when it’s content.
“Yes, is there anything wrong with that?” I felt his smile against my neck. His purr was relaxing and soon enough lulled me to sleep.
