“Ovophagus”

Meleagris gallopavo. An acrylic painting of a male turkey snacking on an egg it stole as a bush fire rages in the distance.

This was done as an entry for a stamp competition here in California. My wife prompted me into participating in an attempt to get me to illustrate an extant theropod. While I didn’t win, it was a fun experience. It did lead to me learning how to depict an iridescent sheen upon a lot of the feathers on the animal, something that might come in handy in depicting certain Mesozoic theropods.

I did work on the turkey while camping in Big Sur, painting in the back of my compact SUV as it rained. It was definitely fun painting amongst the backdrop of nature. We even had a small group of deer traverse through the campsite as I worked. Additionally, Thomas Holtz helped me figure out the title, given my grasp on Latin is barely functional.

Completed in November 2023.
