This is not coming from a physicist or anything, just a layperson with a layperson's understanding of the physics involved, so one could forgive me.
I think there is a potential for a sudden and sharp loss of mass could cause a small star to go supernova. All stars are held in balance, their bulk and gravity holding together what would otherwise be a massive fusion explosion, and the explosive force of the fusion reaction keeping the bulk and mass from collapsing into a black dwarf or to collapse infinitely into a singularity. A supernova is caused when the star runs out of more easily-fused elements and collapses: the heat and pressure caused by the rapid implosion allows these less fusible elements to fuse rapidly, resulting in a colossal release of energy that vastly overwhelms the star's gravity - KABOOM! But, if some of the mass and gravity holding together a smaller star were suddenly removed, the more conventional fusion reaction at the core might outpace the force of pressure and gravity just long enough for a smaller supernova to occur in a star that would otherwise be too small and lightweight for the more intense, energetic fusion reactions that occur in heavier stars to cause conventional supernovae.
Again, this is from a layperson's understanding, but that's the kind of person who writes science fiction anyway.
PS: Something similar happens to create red giants, but, in this instance, rather than overwhelming the balance, the expansive forces increase less drastically, and - while the star's gravity remains the same, the explosive force of fusion at the core increases as the star moves from fusing hydrogen to fusing helium, which is more energetic - rather than exploding, the star's outer layers are pushed away to compensate. Eventually, in the case of a main sequence star like ours, when the fusion of helium and other elements runs out, the star doesn't have enough mass to produce the pressure required to move to fuse heavier elements, so the outer layers, still fusing hydrogen and helium, continue expanding and escape the core's gravity; the core is left behind as a white dwarf and the outer layers of the star become what's known as a planetary nebula (for it's orderly, spherical shape).
Just thought I'd add that.

Mmm, good point. I guess I have to look it up once more in my physic books.

Personally I like the idea. And it makes sense that the First Ones, the actual First Ones that is, would be needed to fight the Third Space aliens.

Not a problem. I love newer Babylon 5 ideas, mostly cause I watched/am watching the show.

To be honest I would like a B5 the next generation sort of thing. Look at what ST:TNG did for ST, not only did it conpletely re-energize the franchise, it quite literally became the universe, leaving the well regarded, but old original Trek in the past and fully assuming the mantle of the universe.
For B5 that may be somewhat harder to do (standards have changed and been upped significantly since the times of TNG) but it isi not impossible and a new B5 series might just re-energize B5, bring it fully into modern times and maybe even gives us more of what we loved about the original

They could focus on Babylon 4 during the 1st Shadow War.
A new series based on that station.

I think Crusade didn't manage to find its footing in time, which made WB lost their patience. Not that they were known for great patience.

Didn't we cause Sol to go nova ourselves? That was always the impression I got.
Also, the Thirdspace aliens are from 'Thirdspace', not the Andromeda Galaxy.

"For"? Do you mean "from"?
That's just how it sounded to me. Why else would the Andromeda Galaxy be involved?

Amras-Arfeiniel In reply to The-Avatar [2013-09-14 07:39:11 +0000 UTC]
Yes sure I meant "from"...
"Living in the nearby Andromeda galaxy were just such a firstone race and like the Vorlons before them they made a cataclysmic error. They opened a doorway to another universe and in doing so released a near unstoppable foe."
I think that is clear enough. o0

Fantastic artwork and story, I'd love to see this become a series or a movie trilogy or something. I agree wholeheartedly that B5 should not be rebooted. At the most just a graphic enhancement to bring the graphics up to what the LOst Tales had for the ships and station etc, but no way a reboot, those actors suited the characters perfectly.Β
I would also love to see a Dilgar war movie.Β
