Description For - June 2012!

My partner this month is the amazingly talented whose art it quite lovely. You should pop over to ~m-u-h-a 's gallery. Yep.

Anywho: the character is Henna, a werefox, in her were form. This is the first card where I've done a more detailed/serious background - I had a lot of fun with it! I was inspired by images of Utah and the arid midwest. Unfortunately I think the scan makes Henna look a little too orange - as usual the card looks much better IRL.

Her part:

Hi! I'm Moon from a.deviantart.net/avatars/f/e/f… " alt=" " title="FeedbackFrenzy"/> ! First off, I have to say I really love this piece! It has a very soft palette, but it really works with this. The background is also pure awesome! On the other hand, I feel like this thigh is a little off... it's not full and muscular like an animal such as this needs it to be. The front limbs have the same problem. Try looking at pictures of muscle and animations of it in action. It really helps with understanding where to shade to give off that muscle in different poses. The tail is also just a little (itsy bitsy) long. It also lacks some shadows.
Despite this, I still like what you did with this. It's probably one of the better animals I've seen on DeviantArt. I can't wait to see what else you can do!

Critique for you through a.deviantart.net/avatars/f/e/f… " alt=" " title="FeedbackFrenzy"/>

I want to start by saying that I absolutely love this piece! The fact that you managed to pack so much detail onto such a small canvas is simply amazing. I love the colors you chose, your composition (both with the character’s pose and the piece as a whole) as well as your outlining technique. Wow, I don’t think there’s much more to critique! But perhaps I can find a few things. You really nailed most of them spot on though!

First small thing that you could consider just to enhance the digital presentation of this piece would be adding a small black (1x1 pixel) border around the edge. Someone suggested this trick to me a while back and it does help make traditional scanned works look a little more professional and helps to keep your viewer’s eye contained within the piece a little more.

The only other things I can really mention as part of this critique are the anatomy and shading. The anatomy looks awesome (much more accurate than anything I have ever drawn, that’s for sure!) but the left rear leg seems to angle back a little strangely. I feel like the leg showing from the ankle down should be positioned a little farther towards the fox’s head. But this is tiny and honestly. . I have seen some photographs with legs doing stranger things. Lastly is the shading. I really like the shading done in the background, but I would love to see just a little more shading done with colored pencils around where your black thatching is in ink – it’s hard to tell though since scanners often just lighten up any shading you do with pencils.

Overall, awesome work here! You have a beautiful style and I can’t wait to see more of your traditional works. I hope that this critique was helpful! Please let me know if you have any questions/comments! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart"/>

Thank you for the critique! I do appreciate it! I've never thought of adding a border to my traditional pieces before but the idea appeals to me. I agree: for digital presentation it will help set them off a lot more. I'll have to try it the next time I upload something! And I do agree on the shading as well: I could have pushed it a lot further than I did.

Thank you once again!

Hello there! I'm from #FeedbackFrenzy and would love to give you some feedback!
Well, I don't know where to start, I really love this picture! the most I like about it is that it's kept completely traditional, something what's very rare at these times.
The focus lies directly on the werefox because of the stronger lineart and higher contrasts. She is very present and I'm very curious on what's her view? it makes a suspence for the whole picture. Something I noticed very late: the right forepaw seems to me a little twisted than a normal fox would stay on it. I'm not an expert on animal drawing but it looks a little unsteady for such an animal. if it was twisted a little more to the viewer, just minimal, it would be extremly perfect.
I really like the composition of the background, though I think that it would look by far more realistic if the mountains in the distance would be a little paler. Or add a little more colour to the closer areas.
But I like the colours you used in general, it creates the atmosphere of a hot desert indeed and somewhat dangerous because of the fox.

All in all, I love it (I probably can't do it better) - there are just minimal changes which are not very important. It's a wonderful drawing, keep it up!

eviri here, from #FeedbackFrenzy #35

I love how the blue sky really helps pop the fox out, really makes it the center of attention. Your use of contrasting colors makes the composition interesting and pleasing to look at.

I think it'd make a big difference if you pushed the contrast with the shadows a little more. Like under the belly, neck and folds of the skin, even the ground underneath. Also with such a warm picture the shading looks a little off with the blue/grey tones. Try brownish-red, it'd give it a lot more depth, as it can be easily blended out into the fur.

The depth of the background is very well done, the light, careful hues and the lack of details show the distance easily! Nice job!

Hello from #FeedbackFrenzy team 8!

First off I love the pose captured there. I'm not an expert on animal anatomy so I can't be sure--it seems like his back is a little too curvy close to the tail, but the sense of stalking comes across perfectly. Also the subtle color blending underneath--the contrasting hues help ram that desert ambience home.

Because this is so small, it's hard to say too much. I think a few small details in the background would help a bit, right now there's a kind of sense that the fox and the background got thrown together because they looked nice rather than because they have a relationship (if that makes sense at all, blarg).

Anyway though, you're clearly quite good with the colored pencils. Great sense of line direction.

Critique for
Firstoff I really like this piece. The character is very well drawn and has a nice dynamic pose. Her anatomy is spot on. I really like the bushy tail. You also shaded her very well. I like how you blended the black with the orange on her legs. All the shades of orange also look nice.
The background is amazing. I can see how much detail you put into it. It looks very realistic. It is however a bit too white in places, maybe use a light orange or yellow. The spiky plant at the front looks a bit transparent, maybe use a darker green.
Overall it's a very nice drawing

Thank you for the critique! I agree with the white. With the background I think my scanner actually picked the white up more so it's a little too bright but on the tail I know I could've pulled in some more orange or brown to tone down the white a little more. And I agree on the plant. I struggled to build up enough color on it.
