Description A traditional Batak Toba House by Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia. 2004

Lake toba is in a giant volcanic crater in the north of Sumatra. The volcanoes explosion was so huge that it is credited as being the largest volcano to have gone off in the last 2 million years. Its now home to the Batak Toba ethnic minority and is a little pocket of Christianity in the mainly Islamic country of Indonesia. The Batak people are mountain warriors famous for their singing ability and ferocity. A group I saw singing while I was there in 2004 came on tour to the Edinburgh Festival last year. They were fantastic!

I went to Lake Toba for my Grade 9 School Trip and it was so amazing! I never thought that dandelions could grow in Indonesia or several other things I didn't knew could be in Indonesia. The buildings reminded me of Tana Toraja.

Do you visit Indonesia often or live there or something?I don't find many dARTists that have been there. (*been living there for 8 years nao*)

Fantastic picture!!! This looks more beautiful than it did in person at most times.

Thank you!
I've been a few times because my sister lives in Sumatra. Funnily enough I'm going back again for 10 days on Wednesday! Taking my 10 week old baby boy to meet his aunty! So we're packing and preparing for the big trip right now - very exciting!
I've seen Tana Toraja too - it was amazing! Indonesian cultures are fascinating!

I'm Indonesian and I haven't go there
but you should try Mt. Bromo in East Java sometimes... it's very very very beautiful sunrise you'll got there

I've heard about Bromo's sunrise. Passed by en route to Bali and Lombok but didn't have time to visit. My sister lives in Medan so I've been to Sumatra the most. Looking forward to visiting Aceh this time!

oh i see
i wanna go to Medan a lot! My country have unlimited incredible mothernature wonders but the government are so corrupt, stupid and so whatsoever...
I love this country but I hate it too
what do you think about my country?

OOoohhhh! Well politically Indonesia is probably one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Very sad really. I love the people, culture, language, food, countryside. But the cities are generally nasty places to be. Been to Makassar in Sulawesi too. It was pretty horrible.
But I still love it. I think I would have a hard time dealing with the corruption if I lived there.

yes absolutely! oh and a silly and dirty process of bureaucracy here too
for instance, i have to pay (read: bribe) Rp. 300.000,- only to make a driving license instead of following the official test priced 75.000 rupiahs...
of course i chose to bribe because if im paying for the official test, they won't let me pass until about 4 times... it means im gonna pay more
ah! after i graduate i'll be working on UK/US/European countries, once again i just love the mother nature but absolutely NOT for the government
poor Indonesia...

I know. Its so sad. I found myself bribing officials a few years ago so my boyfriend at the time could have a passport so we could go to Malaysia. Similarily expensive bribe!
You're one of the lucky ones who can leave with a degree. We call that the brain drain here!

But it would be much better if Indonesia developed a better system of goverment. But that takes time, lots of time! Something America never does seem to undertand when it imposes a new puppet dictatorship and calls it democratic.

I love the look of the smoke rising too. Thanks for looking at my humble traveling adventure snaps. I just had a crappy wee camera but it caught something nice here I think. I really appreciate your compliment... It means a lot to me!

Yeah its easy without rules. But I can't spell indonesian yet. There are a few fundamental differences in spelling that as you see I get wrong. I learnt my Indonesian from people not from books. But my sister speaks fluently so I'll learn it one day!

Bali is very pretty. Beautiful place and the culture is Hindu/Buddhist with south east Asian twist- nothing like it. Every island in Indonesia is completely different from the next. They vary so much in culture, landscape and wildlife! Sumatra is jungle covered luscious green island and further down the archipelago the islands are much dryer, desert beaches, tropical island style. Ahh so beautiful. You'll have to go see for yourself one day!
