Tonal values, you nailed them. I know a human interest image like this should be based solely on the content of the image, but the tonal values is what catches, and draws, the eye first. Supurb rendition of the grey scale. They set the stage for the mood and character of the image, and it's what caught my eye to begin with, and forced me to take a closer look at the shot. I didn't even notice the title at first. At first, to me, it was a classicaly well done B&W of an old lady. Once I noticed the title is when I REALLY started scrutinizing the image. Here is Human Fortitude, Perseverence, Indepenence and Dignity that is the hallmark of all mankind. Not just that she's old, and blind, but your spacial composition around her puts her in a world that hints of it's vastness, and pits her against the daily perils of survival. Her expression is uncertain as she ventures forth into the unknown area she inhabits. The way she clutches tightly to the bag in her hands, reinforces the feeling of uncertainty. You've caught a slice of everyday Life at it's most poignant (sp) moment and revealed it in a most straight~forward, yet sensitive, manner. Preserving the dignity and respect of this kindly, elderly, woman. I've long been an ardent admirer, and was HEAVILY influenced, by the Internationally renowned French photojournalist, Henri Cartier~Bresson. If you're not familiar with his work, I suggest you do some research on him. He was, if nothing else, a Master Photographic~Craftsman of composition. He strove in his images to capture, "The Decisive Moment". That 1/125th of second when all the elements gel together in everyday Life that explains man, and explains man to man. No higher compliment could I pay you on this image than to say HCB (Henri Cartier~Bresson) couldn't have done a better job of capturing this moment than you did. This image is not only coffee table photo book material but, of a museum quality too, that should be put on exhibit. Magnum Photos would accept this in a half of a New York Nano~second. THIS ONE, is def going in my faves folder. Thank you so much for continuiing to share your craft with us. It's not only inspiring but it enrichs and enhances all our Lives. MG.
