Description My entry for alexandrasalas 's Art Nouveau contest.

I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold, and leaves of gold there grew:
Of wind I sang, a wind there came and in the branches blew.
Beyond the Sun, beyond the Moon, the foam was on the Sea,
And by the strand of Ilmarin there grew a golden Tree.
Beneath the stars of Ever-eve in Eldamar it shone,
In Eldamar beside the walls of Elven Tirion.
There long the golden leaves have grown upon the branching years,
While here beyond the Sundering Seas now fall the Elven-tears.
O LΓ³rien! The Winter comes, the bare and leafless Day;
The leaves are falling in the stream, the River flows away.
O LΓ³rien! Too long I have dwelt upon this Hither Shore
And in a fading crown have twined the golden elanor.
But if of ships I now should sing, what ship would come to me,
What ship would bear me ever back across so wide a Sea?

As the title implies this is Galadriel from Tolkien's writings, best known for her part in 'Lord of the rings'. Her song and Klimt's work were the main inspiration for this. Klimt's gold-leaf work would have suited the character better but I tried my best within my favorite medium:ink.

I swear I'm in love with your ink art. It's like out of a children's book! Quick question: What is you usual working format? Do you work on large sheets of paper or small ones?

Glad you like my art.Β
I work on A4 and smaller, lately a bit smaller than A5. I have gone bigger a couple of times but my method is quite laborious and I don't really have the time to do big pieces.

A4 still seems pretty large for such details and patience. Very nice anyway !

WOW

How did you do the white outlines in the leaves and flowers? Did you just leave those parts blank and color around them, or are they pasted on or something?Β

I don't have the dexterity to paint around skinny edges; I used ecoline white liquid watercolor after everything was dry. The stuff is very opaque.

I think an type of art nouveau goes well with Tolkien and Klimt has a special place among my sources of inspiration.

I'm not sure, it was unevenly spread out across a week. Probably more than 10 hours.

I'm glad you like it. The lyrics aren't mine, they were written by Tolkien for this character, and they were my main inspiration so I thought I should post them. Here you can find the full lyrics-> . There are people who put these lyrics to music->link ; Link ; link .Personally I think there can never be to many versions of this song

This is so gorgeous. No other piece in the contest has this amount of detail. I have a few older editions of LOTR from the 1970's (they belonged to my mom before she passed them down to me) and your illustration looks just like the designs on the covers. If LOTR were illustrated, they would certainly use yours.

The brown, gold, and red look beautiful together-- they emanate so much warmth and are reminiscent of early autumn, when the leaves are changing color yet the weather hasn't cooled down yet. I also like how you used Galadriel herself as negative space, drawing attention to her face and hand as the primary focus f the picture. And yes, Klimt would be proud of an homage to his work

How much time do you usually spend on one of your artworks? You must have the patience of a saint to give each pen stroke a purposeful place.

Aww your comment made my dayFor someone that started doing Tolkien-related illustrations just a year ago it's very flattering that you think I should illustrate the whole LOTR When I think of official illustrations for the LOTR and Tolkien's work in general I think Gold-Seven Γ‚ 's work, but art nouveau in general would work well for his writings.

With the level of reproduction of his work I believe Klimt would be happy with anything that isn't an ashtray or a tissue

On average two or three days if don't have classes to attend or assignments to do. I work very slowly. It usually takes me ages to decide on a composition, then I like to take lots of breaks for various reasons, either because I don't know what to do next and I think best when I'm in bed or I get another idea so I need to do a sketch or I just feel like doing something else. I find it very useful to be able to look at a piece with fresh eyes. The detail work is my favorite part because by the time I get to it everything is in place and I can just relax. Β  Β
