Description U.S. Navy Aviation Boatswain's Mates (also known as "green shirts") onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. These green shirts are attaching a device commonly known as the "hold back bar" on an F/A-18 Super Hornet. This bar attaches itself to the steam-powered catapult as it's being dragged along by the aircraft while taxiing forward. When ready for launch, the F/A-18 will thrust into full tension while the hold back bar keeps the aircraft in place. Rated up to tens of thousands of lbs, this bar releases the aircraft when the launch sequence is activated, sending the "bird" airborne off the flight deck.
