Description "One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I'm after a prize to-night,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way."

He rose upright in the stirrups; he scarce could reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair i' the casement! His face burnt like a brand
As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight,
(Oh, sweet, black waves in the moonlight!)
Then he tugged at his rein in the moonliglt, and galloped away to the West.

-- excerpt from The Highwayman, by Alfred Noyes

...the Poem also states her name--Bess. She's "the landlord's black-eyed daughter" and meets a very tragic end with her hunky highwayman lover... there's a very haunting but catchy version of the song done by Loreena McKennitt which I took inspiration from.

I love it completely--she already has such a compelling voice, and the tune and feel and atmosphere of the song is just perfect.

I know! Have you heard her other adapted-poem songs? The Lady of Shalott is just as beautiful as The Highwayman, as is The English Ladye and the Knight. And of course all of her other songs are lovely.

I LOVE the Lady of Shalott--it's both cheery and sad at the same time... and I think I love her newest album best... I love it when she does songs inspired by the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

I think I like her Celtic-ish stuff more, but the Middle Eastern-ish stuff is really pretty too.

I totally spazzed when I saw this. That is one of my favorite poems in the whole wide world. It's beautiful, and the song version you mentioned is appropriately haunting. Totally love this. Her hair is magical.

Thanks It's one of my all time favorites too right along with some Byron and Yeats and Dickinson... and a billion others for that matter I needed the hair to be the focal point because that's what always stood out to me-- 'black cascade of perfume' and all

Again, thanks!

Laureena's version is soo captivating ! I could just see the movie in my head of the story.

And your art so beautifully reflects that soft romantic angle - love the hair and the night gown, very feminine and somewhat showing her fragility on top with the older times fashion too

I know, right?! She uses her voice perfectly with the imagery of the poem.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment--I'm glad I could make her seem appropriately fragile and feminine, as that's precisely what I was going for
