Description

Vardik had seen any number of strange things over the course of his many years, but he could think of none that bested the scene unfolding before him now.  Dunira all but frothed at the mouth as she repeatedly jabbed her index finger in what passed for the monstrosity’s face.  In response, the hulking thing giggled and extended one of its many tentacles in an effort to play with the warrior doe’s darting fingertip.

Within the beast’s dimly translucent mass hung the blurry shapes of a small cook pot, a tankard, a brass candlestick, several utensils, a smattering of coins, and Dunira’s sword.  At one time or another, all had been hurled at the creature either in fright or as appeasement.  All except the sword, which had been wielded against it with murderous intent.  Like the other objects, it had been swiftly absorbed into the creature’s gelatinous body.

“Return my blade!”  Dunira shouted.  “Return it or by all the gods, I shall clout you sore!”  Apparently delighted, the misshapen creature only redoubled its giggling.

“I dinnae think yer blows’ll change its mind, lass,” Vardik remarked.  “Ye’ve already smote it with yer steel.”  He was going to add “to no avail,” but on apprehending the doe’s mounting rage, he thought the better of it.

Predictably, Dunira began to pound the creature with her fists, causing its blubbery flesh to jiggle in concert with its warbling laughter.  Vardik could not help himself and he too began to chuckle with the ridiculousness of it all.

In sooth, the thing before them was harmless.  The villagers had said as much.  Its only sins were that it possessed a fearful appearance, was mildly bothersome, and would not relinquish objects that were thrown at it.  Even so, Dunira had taken the villagers’ complaints as her commission to slay.  She had set out to destroy the pest and now here they were.

At last Dunira exhausted herself and had to stop.  The creature, seemingly bored, began to drift away.  “Come Vardik,” she puffed, “let us follow the beast back to its hoard…  I’ll get my sword back and mayhap some treasure for my trouble!”  The Dwarven warrior said nothing, but intrigued by the idea of discovering a bit of lost gold, he fell in step behind his ward.

After a time, the creature led them to the shores of a dark and deep-looking lake.  It then proceeded directly into the water, making for whatever subaqueous lair it called home.  Vardik struggled to hold back his laughter.  “Nooo!  ‘Tis not just!” Dunira squealed as the creature —and her sword—disappeared beneath the wind-raked wavelets.

Tears of frustration stood in Dunira’s eyes.  Vardik considered how he would feel if it were his hammer and not her sword that had just vanished.  Reaching up, he patted Dunira softly on the back.  “Fret not, lass; we’ll get ye another blade.”

“’Tis not just,” Dunira repeated.  Keeping his own counsel, the Dwarf remained silent.

Thank you!  True about her armor    ; lucky for Dunira, the creature only seems to hold onto things that are thrown at it...

"Beware of the Blob-

It creeps, and leaps, and slides, and glides

Across the floor, right through the door

And all around the wall- a splotch, a blotch

Be careful of the Blob!

LOL -- Nice!  I remember seeing The Blob on creature-feature TV.  That movie freaked me out back in the day.  My blob is much more benign!

Now I'm wondering what would annoy the creature enough to drop it's booty. I'm thinking extremes of heat or cold, acids or caustics, or just plunging a hand into its mass. Just, eww...

Hmmm -- Heat might work.  Maybe a mob of peasants with torches?

Ha ha!  Thanks!  And Jell-O is right; I hadn't thought about it, but that's pretty much what this thing is made out of, only tougher.  Did you ever have to eat that Jell-O salad with the marshmallows suspended in it?  Maybe that's just a Midwestern thing...

That was an amazing article -- Some of the best blog writing I've read in a while (outside of Mister Scribbles, of course).  I loved the bluebloods trying to figure out what's happening to their desserts.  This line alone had me shooting milk out my nose:  "I say, old fellow, have you noticed a lot of Jell-O about? It's the damndest thing. Wifey used to put out cake after supper. Big chocolate bastards; delicious."

The '70s did suck -- at least the late '70s did.  But that's when I was in junior high, which would have sucked no matter what era we're talking about.  There was something about the post-Vietnam years that was just plain bad.  Like the hippies had grown up and were starting to make money, but they still had that "let it all hang out" mentality.  Anyone for tube tops and roller disco?

I know that guy in Maine.  He needs professional counseling.

I hope that guy gets the readers he deserves -- That's a ton of work and some really good material, too!

I have a deer head that I've hung up high on the wall like that.  The idea is that you crane your neck to look up at its face and after a while, you start feeling dizzy and the deer's mouth looks like it's moving.  I keep waiting for it to say something, but no luck so far.

Ha ha!  I confess a certain attraction to taxidermy, don't know why.  I would never kill an animal for sport, but if I run across a neglected mount in some junk shop, I figure that I can do a better job of honoring its life than they can.  This particular deer head has (to my mind) an uncanny sort of intelligence about it.  Whoever did the work was very good at their craft, or perhaps they were touched by some strange god.

That BBQ place sounds good -- Fried corpses are always most tasty, I'm sorry to say...
