Description

Twelve or thirteen months had passed since Opal was last in these parts.  As the trucks rumbled into place, she stared at the dusty fields and overhanging cumulus clouds.  To the untrained eye, it appeared that a hell of a storm was in the making.  But Opal knew that these clouds wouldn’t bring much rain.  Not enough to save this year’s crop at any rate.

And so what?  Why should she care?  Opal had left that life behind.  Whatever they were doing at the farm was not her concern.

“What’s on your mind, zuckermaus?”  Ordinarily show people don’t pry into each other’s business, but Herr Laufer was her partner and trust was their watchword.  And besides, Opal couldn’t resist when he called her “zuckermaus.”  She knew it had something to do with the German word for “sugar,” but he always said it so that it sounded like “sucker mouse.”

Opal gave the wolf a wan smile.  “Aw… ain’t nothin’ – Jes’ the blues.  It’s the road, I reckon.”

Herr Laufer gave her a speculative look.  “The road…  For us it always goes in a circle.  We are close to your home, ja?”  Opal nodded mutely.  “Do you want to go there?”

“No!”  Her response was vehement, angry.

“OK then … I will ask no more.”

The young doe bowed her head and screwed her eyes shut, hoping that no tears would escape.  After a few seconds, she looked up.  Herr Laufer stood there motionless, his expression full of compassion.

“You know something,” he remarked, “I have had many assistants over the years and some of them were very good.  But you…  you are the best.  I throw the knives at you and you smile like it’s Christmas.  You are strong.  Don’t forget it.”  And with that, the veteran messerwerfer withdrew a silver flask from his vest pocket and offered it to Opal.

“Thanks,” she replied simply.

“Any time, zuckermaus.”  The ghost of Opal’s stage smile flitted across her features then.  The show, after all, must go on.

Now I know what a zuckermaus is.  This is portrait grade work, and I have high standards for portraits.  Many years from now, when Anthro art is recognized as the game changer it is, modified humans, many heartbroken deer people among them, will be standing in front of this one last time before it is auctioned.  Then, a Japanese leopardmorph will buy it for his own private enjoyment, and that will be the last the world sees of it until the copies being sold are declared frauds, causing a huge rift between Sotheby's and the public.  The Western United Alliance and New Japan will almost be brought to war over this, but cooler heads will prevail.  Just as well, as the gene edited Japanese Octotigers would be more than a handful to deal with.  All because of an artist only known as the 'Master of Maine', a region still not habitable because of the radioactive dust and superheated liquid granite left over from The War To End All Wars, and all the ones that followed that.

Do you understand what you have unleashed upon the world?

That's as fine a destiny as I could ever want!  But it sounds like the Great State of Maine will have to rethink its self-congratulatory billboards that every visitor must see when they come north across the Piscataqua...  The ones that read "Maine:  The Way Life Should Be."

Seriously, I got a huge kick out of reading this...  Been trying all day to imagine what an Octotiger actually looks like.

Thanks as always for kind words and creative attention!

Ha ha!  Octotigers have 4 legs and 4 arms, stand 7 foot tall on all four feet, are extremely intelligent and adore kabuki theater.  Expensive to maintain and if in great pain will turn on anyone around them, a flaw with that design.  They have hands and delight in the manipulation of clever machinery, such as plasma rifles.  Octotigers hate their masters and are itching to break away and form their own country.  They also feed off the wounded and slain.  Wouldn't you want an Octotiger to come live with you?  How wonderful!  3.bp.blogspot.com/-kbD4gbQQPEs…

Uhh...  Maybe I'll just stick with plain old quadrotigers...  These guys sound like a handful.  Wait, make that eight handfuls... (drums and crash of cymbals *here*)
