In a land where heat and humidity render fashion impractical and where the application of body paint is strictly governed by custom, it can be difficult for a stylish young lady to express her sense of individuality. The rain costume represents one of few such opportunities and so it is a beloved part of every tribeswoman’s wardrobe. Made of finely plaited river grass waterproofed with clear resin, it is a highly effective defense against the torrential downpours that frequently sweep the plateau. More importantly, it is also a kind of walking canvas upon which the wearer may demonstrate her taste and creativity.

The cut of the rain costume can vary widely, from abbreviated capelet to full-length robe. Surface patterning can also vary and although there are traditional colors and motifs associated with each village, the prevalence of intervillage festivals has fostered a great deal of borrowing and individual interpretation of decorative elements. Under these circumstances, each costume is virtually unique.

Somewhat more open than usual, this particular example sacrifices some of its protective function for convenience and ease of mobility. Typical of kiru or “short trip” costumes, it is ideally suited to running quick errands within the village. In this case, the wearer is on a mission of mercy, carrying the Ouataki equivalent of tea and biscuits to a sick friend.
