this one is a bit 'experimental' since the original illustration was rendered in black and white 
personally i've always found complementary colour schemes (blue/orange, purple/yellow, red/green) very difficult to work on, but this piece by *priteeboy helped win me over: [link]

Well I did a buffet with my family (which doesn't include all my cousins coz I have far too many for my 30m2 XD), my parents, brothers and sister, grandma and aunt were there!
That was really nice, champagne and cakes I did MYSELF
We had a great evening and it's really funny coz my aunt's son wrote me card saying that he chose it because it was as blue as my eyes.... and GOD that was cute!
So tell me, when is your bday? I'm afraid I don't remember and I wouldn't miss it!

The colors do work out well! Maybe you could add some slight outlining highlights to Bishop, to bring out a 3rd dimension. Right now the flat black seems a little confusing to my eyes.
You could probably argue that I get confused easily...
