(I do find myself hoping the snow has just fallen; otherwise, the untouched drifts mean there are few or no living inhabitants. But I've noticed that about fantasy art in general; whether it's castles or walled cities we see from outside, we show the main road and gate but we never include the trodden shortcuts, the outspills, the exposed dirt of practice yards and clutter of broken baskets and wisps of hay, the stray chickens and horse droppings and hanging laundry and all the other signs of life. The realist half of me regrets that; the other half doesn't particularly WANT to see Rivendell's outhouses or the scrub-brushes of Caer Paravel.)
