This is so good!
But a very minor critique: I feel that an American museum would write "Do not touch", they would put an emphasis on the "not". Don't know about Britain, and maybe I'm wrong, but that's how it feels to me: what you wrote is spoken language, not the formal style an institution would choose.
Anyway, this is art to walk into and dream myself away. Thanks for posting all your stuff here!

How do you always get such realistic colours? Please tell me!

Rahll In reply to Rushlord [2008-09-24 02:36:29 +0000 UTC]
Seriously, don't listen to the guy who just responded to you about getting good colors. Color picking from a photo is good to get a solid start and nice palette, but what makes painting so special is that you can do things in a more artistic sense and include colors that aren't in a photo to make a statement about what's going on or the mood.
Plus, straight up color picking, without making your own choices and decisions is kind of a two steps forward, one step backwards scenario. You might get better with your work and rendering, but you're also hindering your abilities as an artist by relying on reference to determine your colors instead of making it a critical thinking process. It's kind of like getting Starbucks every morning instead of making your own coffee. If you don't learn to do it yourself, what are you going to do when for some reason you suddenly don't have Starbucks available to you.
And don't use a new layer for each different color, that's just asinine and ridiculous. Fewer layers is more ideal and will ultimately make things easier on you. Saying more layers is better is kind of like saying cigarettes are good for you, it's a contradiction to common sense. Keep things as simple as possible.
Good painters know what colors to use when and where without necessarily having to choose from a photo. Having reference is always a good idea, but color picking constantly will only keep you from understanding color theory and having a solid artistic understanding of what goes where and why. For practice, try choosing colors close to the reference, without picking from it all the time. You'll eventually develop a good eye for color subtleties, which is essential for becoming a solid painter.
I know I just wrote a novel, but I seriously can't stand to see someone giving such bad advice. Whenever you get advice like that, check the source. He makes it sound like he knows what he's talking about, and not to trash the guy, but his gallery says otherwise.
Good luck bud, take care.

The other guy just tried to teach him how to eat. Not how to get the food.
Your "novel" are exactly what people over DA need, they need someone who KNOWS something trying to teach then.
Thank you for writing everything and not been a lazy guy who would just answer "use a photo as reference".
Have a wonderful life. \o/

Thank you for the advice Rhall. That's usually the way I approach a painting. If I have a reference I look at the colours but I try to not pick them up. So I hope to get a good eye for color shemes one day. But it is still pretty hard from imagination.
