I thought I would continue the god-trend and try my hand at illustrating the the ancient Greek god of war. Though he shared that title with Athena, their approaches to warfare were quite different. Whereas Athena represented strategy and out-thinking an opponent, Ares was all about brutality and carnage. He was certainly one of the less pleasant Olympians to say the least.Created in pencil and cleaned up in Photoshop.

Ares is weird. He starts off as a sort of dumb brute who gets beaten up just to show how tough someone else is, like in the case of Athena rocking him. Then when the Romans adopt him into Mars, he gets agriculture added to his domains and becomes a much more thoughtful and serious deity.
I think this was the first recorded case of gaining a level.

A great observation! Ares is basically the benchmark when it's time to showing off how tough/determined someone else was. Athena defeated him, a matter of brains defeating brawn; Heracles bested him in a wrestling match, a case of brawn beaten by much bigger brawn; and Hephaestus gave him what for when he caught him putting the moves on his beloved Aphrodite, a case of brawn being taken down by an angry, resourceful husband.
Being redefined as Mars was definitely leveling up for him.
