Me: hey guys, its me andrew clark here

Elisa: and im elisa

Me: and today me and elisa will be going over the second episode of death battle to give out our thoughts on this episode and to reanalyze this episode with updated information on the characters from the source material

Elisa: last time we talked about the first episode of death battle, which went over boba fetts fight with samus possibly to prevent him from assassinating the galactic federations chairman keaton (because you know, adam malkovich died) and in todays upload, we will be talking about akumas fight with shang tsung after he has somehow entered the mortal kombat tournament (i guess that mortal kombats universe has gateways to other worlds, explaining why characters like spawn and robocop are showing up to participate in the tournament)

Me: right, anyways, for akuma, we will be focusing on the version of him from the games, meaning that we wont be covering the oni, asuras wrath, tekken, cyberbots and power rangers versions of him

Elisa: but as for shang tsung, we will be covering the version of him from both timelines in the mortal kombat series, so his counterparts from mortal kombat legends scorpions revenge and the 2021 movie wont be talked about here

Me: so with that out of the way, lets select our characters and get started

"My name is Akuma! The supreme master of the fist!"—Akuma

"I am Akuma. And I will teach you the meaning of pain!"—Akuma (Street Fighter IV  series)

"Hmph. So it's you..."—Akuma (Street Fighter V )

Me: alright so Akuma and his brother Gouken were students of Goutetsu. Goutetsu taught a nameless life-threatening martial art, which incorporates elements of Karate, Judo, and Kempo. He also taught the Shun Goku Satsu  (literally Instant Hell Murder), a lethal technique which, although incredibly powerful, puts the user in considerable danger.

As the brothers progressed under Goutetsu's tutelage, a dispute arose on the true nature of their fighting style and the path to master it. Gouken, unable to accept the violent nature and the Satsui no Hado of his fighting style, left Goutetsu to begin his own dojo, which Goutetsu did not oppose. Akuma continued Goutetsu's teachings, and vowed to use their fighting style as it was intended.

In order to learn Shun Goku Satsu, Akuma embraced the principle of Satsui no Hado, and was forced to give up any compassion he held towards other human beings. In addition, Akuma realized his limits as a martial artist could be expanded, and left Goutetsu's guidance of enlightenment to train alone to gain more power. However, due to embracing the Satsui no Hado to its fullest extent, he developed a lust to fight to the death, unlike Goutetsu, who had been able to use the Satsui no Hado without giving in to its dark side.

After coming back from his island, Akuma went back to Goutetsu, and fought him in a death match to prove that he had surpassed him. Akuma killed his master with the Shun Goku Satsu, who died happy to see his student surpass him, and Akuma, believing that he was the true master of the Art, took the prayer beads of his dead master and placed it on his neck. Gouken came to visit his former master to see how he was doing, only to find his lifeless body and his brother, now no longer human. Gouken, shocked to see that his younger brother took the life of their master, berated Akuma, who said nothing and left for the woods.

Many years later, Akuma fought Gouken, while the then-young duo of Ryu and Ken  watched.[8] [9]  Akuma told Gouken that he was not strong enough to face him without giving in the killing intent; Gouken retorted that the art was much more than just death and destruction, accusing Akuma of dishonoring their master's name. Akuma told his brother that Goutetsu did not truly understand the art, and that he was a fool for not using the Satsui no Hado to its fullest extent. The fight continued, and Gouken won. Akuma told his brother to kill him, but Gouken had no intention of murdering his own kin, prompting Akuma to call him weak for sparing the life of a strong opponent and declare that he would return.

A couple of years later, Akuma came back to Gouken's dojo and fought him in battle, using the Shun Goku Satsu on him. Akuma believed him dead, not knowing that Gouken had somehow lived through the attack by emptying his soul, and was only in a coma. Ken saw the flash of the attack while running to the dojo, but arrived only to find Gouken on the floor. Knowing who was behind this, Ken confronted Akuma in the woods and fought him, only to be defeated. After defeating Ken, Akuma disappeared without a trace.

ever since then, akuma has travelled the world day and night to find worthy opponents to fight which lead into him joining the first world warrior tournament where he clashes with gen, ryu and m bison (Street Fighter Alpha Trilogy) watching the second world warrior tournament where he waits for a worthy opponent in the tournament to fight (Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo) fights with ryu as a way to make him give into the satsui no hado (Street Fighter 4 Series) and during the mudo tensho prologue from Akuma's Story in street fighter 5, he and Gen fight once again. Akuma becomes victorious in the battle, but was criticized by Gen for leading to the path of discarding humanity. He then finishes and seemingly kills Gen off for good. He then sees a vision of Ryu rejecting the Satsui no Hado, much to his frustration. Necalli  appears and challenges Akuma for his soul. Not only did Necalli lose to Akuma, but he attempts to devour Akuma and Akuma does the Mudo Tensho to escape Necalli's stomach. He then seeks Ryu and battles him, in a Satsui no Hado  Vs. Mu no Ken  clash. Akuma defeats Ryu in battle, but does not kill him. Instead, he questions if there is no one that can match him. Ryu, smiling while laying on the ground, asks questions to Akuma, claiming that his fists will continue to communicate with Akuma on opposite ends. Akuma then flees, letting fate determine when those two will meet again.

Me: i havent played the street fighter series yet, but thanks to the marvel vs capcom series and super smash bros, i want to get into this series at some point, as akuma is a pretty cool character after seeing him in ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 where he and several other heroes and villains from the marvel and capcom universes teams up to stop galactus from consuming both universes, and while im waiting for this years E3 to come around next month, i could see either akuma or chun li getting in next as dlc fighters for super smash bros ultimate, they might not happen, but we'll see

Me: also, since this episode came out before street fighter 5 was released, they used akumas story from the previous 4 games and possibly the udon comics until the game is released, i had to complete his profile here by talking about his story from street fighter 5, this is season 1 of death battle were talking about here, so the research for some of the characters are pretty much left incomplete or inaccurate until later additions from each franchise featured on the show, this is the whole reason why me and elisa are here

Me: but anyways, there are a total of 5 versions of him, which includes his oni counterpart from Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition who is a hypothetical "What If?" version of akuma where he basically becomes one with the satsui no hado to the point where he becomes an unstoppable monster thats pretty much hellbent on destruction, then we have the version of akuma from Asuras Wrath where he appears in The Strongest Vs The Angriest dlc as he forces ryu back into the original timeline as he clashes with asura for 500 years until they have turned to stone, we also have the version of him from tekkens universe where he appears in Tekken 7 in order to kill heihachi and kazuya as a request from kazumi, following this is Zero Akuma (or Z-Akuma) from Cyberbots Fullmetal Madness where he is pretty much a giant robot version of akuma, basically imagine cyber akuma from marvel superheroes vs street fighter but apocalypse fully manages to turn him into a giant robot version of himself who is almost around the same size as him, and finally we have his counterpart from the power rangers universe where he is brought back by rita repulsa (i think either the main shows version of her or the 2017 movies version of rita) to have his own universe to conquer, only to be sucked into the legacy wars where he clashes with various power rangers from different points in the power rangers timeline and the 2017 movie, including ryu and chun li who in this universe, has became the ryu and blue phoenix rangers

"Your soul is mine!" —Shang Tsung's famous Battle Cry
"It has begun!" —Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath  story.

Elisa: alright, this one is a bit...complicated for me to cover since there are basically 2 backstories for him from 2 completely different timelines, so i will be talking about both his backstories here...were gonna have to do this again when we talk about the fighters in the dc universe aren't we?

Me: yep, and because were staying true to the source materials for each universe featured in death battle, we cant go with the dcau backstories sadly except for terry mcginnis as batman beyond

Elisa: oh lord doing these series of uploads is a mistake, its gonna take us literally forever to get into season 8, *takes a deep breath and calms down while talking to herself* come on elisa, calm down, focus and do what omni man said and think

*elisa looks at everyone who is reading the description*

Elisa: sorry about that guys, lets get back on topic

Elisa: so in the original timeline from the games up until mortal kombat armageddon, Shang Tsung is a sorcerer from Outworld  and a servant of Shao Kahn . Long ago, he was caught cheating in the Mortal Kombat tournaments , so the Elder Gods  punished him by making him age swiftly until an untimely death, with the only way to prevent this being by absorbing souls. His skill almost had given him enough victories for Shao Kahn to take over Earthrealm , but he was stopped by his greatest opponent, Liu Kang .

Elisa: but in the new timeline from the 2011 game, mortal kombat 10 (or "Mortal Kombat X") and mortal kombat 11 along with its aftermath dlc, he is a Soul Sorcerer and historic host of the Mortal Kombat. Born in Earthrealm, Shang Tsung’s relentless pursuit of powerful magic led him to Outworld, where Shao Kahn offered him a dark power that no sorcerer on Earthrealm could. Shang Tsung pledged his eternal loyalty to Shao Kahn in exchange for this evil magic, but he is no faithful servant. He dreams of the day his sorcery will overtake Shao Kahn’s, and he’ll pay any price to get there.

Elisa: near the end of the aftermath dlc, Shang Tsung prepared to use the hourglass, but Fire God Liu Kang reappears in the climax of the last chapter, repeating the words Shang Tsung called out to him at the start ("Cease, before you doom us all.") to prevent the sorcerer from taking Kronika's role. Shang Tsung realized Liu Kang allowed him to progress as he did for the latter to claim the crown, at the cost of losing his friends. The sorcerer complimented the Fire God's deviousness, as he was challenged by him. The player can then choose whether they fight as Shang Tsung or Fire God Liu Kang.

If the player picks Shang Tsung and wins, the sorcerer chokes Liu Kang as he mocks him about his failure. Shang Tsung then consumes his soul, leaving behind his dried corpse. With his enemies vanquished, Shang Tsung subjugated the realms of the new timeline under his thumb, while making Raiden and Fujin his loyal minions.

If the player picks Liu Kang and wins, he pulls out temporal energy from the Hourglass, and blasts it at Shang Tsung. As the sorcerer's body slowly dissolves into dusts of sand, Liu Kang reaches out to him, picking up Kronika's Crown and molding a New Era.

Elisa: so yeah, this was shang tsungs backstory from both timelines

Elisa: anyways, seeing as i am still a kid while my partner and mentor andrew is much older then i am, ive never gotten into mortal kombat because of the M rating as this series gets BLOODY at times! especially with the fatalities, yes this series has been trimmed down for a T rating once in the mortal kombat vs dc spinoff game, but thats besides the point

Me: yeah, and i was introduced to this series because of the 1990s mortal kombat movie which was a decent (not good, but not bad either, just decent) adaptation of the games, this movie was released in the 1990s afterall and video game movies back then has a sour reputation to the public and fans of each franchise until this "Video Game Movie Curse" was lifted thanks to the detective pikachu movie and the sonic movie, but i might get into mortal kombat at some point, just not right now, and im not starting with mortal kombat 11 because of the fact that you NEED internet at all times in order to play it, im not saying that mortal kombat 11 is a bad game like what that foulmouthed red brony said about the game, im just not going to get the game for my ps4 at the moment because of this problem, god im still annoyed that this website deleted my callout response to MAP, i worked really hard on that response

Elisa: right...now then, shang tsung is a pretty interesting antagonist so far and i do like how he was redesigned in mortal kombat 11 to resemble the version of him from the 1995 movie, which is a nice callback to the movie even if i havent watched it while andrew has

Elisa: aside from the versions of shang tsung from both timelines, there are 2 other versions of him, which are his counterpart from mortal kombat legends scorpions revenge where his role is loosely based on his game counterpart as he serves as the main antagonist of the movie alongside quan chi and we have the version of him from the newest mortal kombat movie on HBO Max, but since the movie is still fresh out of the oven from when it released 3  or 4 weeks ago as this poster is being uploaded, i wont be talking about the movies version of shang tsung here as me and andrew dont want to spoil the movie for anyone who hasnt had the chance to watch it, so the only thing im going to say about this version of the character is that hes the main antagonist and thats pretty much it

Me: now as for the death battle itself, its pretty decent as it feels like an actual match for the mortal kombat series if akuma was ever a guest character in the series and the research has been mostly pretty accurate, even if its abit outdated with street fighter 5 and the games from mortal kombats new timeline coming out after this episode has released, this is also another sprite animated fight as it feels like an actual crossover match that would actually happen if capcom actually cooperated with nether realm studios to work on a crossover game for street fighter and mortal kombat kinda like how street fighter crossed over with the marvel and capcom universes in the marvel vs capcom series, tekken in street fighter x tekken and with the capcom, namco, sega, fire emblem awakening and xenoblade chronicles universes in project x zone

Me: as for the sprites used for both fighters in this episode, akumas sprites comes from street fighter 3 second strike while shang tsungs sprites are from mortal kombat 3 and so far, these are really good choices for their sprites

Me: but yeah, this was our thoughts on the second episode of death battle, join us next time for when me and elisa will enter a new world so we can interact with one of its heroes to give us info on wonder woman in the Rogue Vs Wonder Woman episode of death battle

Me: so until then guys, ill see you all later

Imagine the Kombat style dialogue:

Akuma: I am Akuma and I will show you the meaning of pain!

Shang Tsung: Pain is beneath me. Your soul will be mine!

Akuma: Your soul will cease to exist!
