Description Another portrait of Gabriel I just got around to finishing. This time in one of his less crazy moods.

I'm awful at color, so /obviously/ the most logical course of action was to take ALL the colors, mash them together, and see what would happen. Oddly enough, it wasn't anywhere near as weird as I expected.

I'm also awful at naming things.

amazing artwork yet again Β
The smashing together of colors worked really well I think, the different tones of blue, white and fleshtone colors used in the right places really add a lot of definition to the face. another thing I love are the cheekbones and the very characteristic eyes there is a lot of personality in those eyes 8D he also got some very neat looking hair and I like the lighter strokes in them hm I do think that the ear might have needed a bit more attention, though it isn't really the focus of the drawing it does stick out a bit. I think that with a bit more shading and definition it would look better. but that's just my opinion!

anyways, awesome portrait!

Wow, thank you! You're right, I completely missed that! I updated it and it certainly looks way better, but that also reminds me that I REALLY need to work on my ear anatomy.

Again, thank you, it's so rare to find people that give out such thorough critique, and I really appreciate it!

no problem! ah it indeed looks a lot better now! ears can be difficult to draw, especially human type ears D:

oh you're welcome glad to hear you didn't mind the critique! it's always a bit of a risk giving one cause sometimes people won't take it well

Well, you took the time to share some of your own time and experience to help me when giving critique, and I think that's really nice. So again, thank you! But I agree, giving critique can sometimes be just as nerve wrecking as receiving it.

aww no problem! that's indeed my intention, to help people improve or give tips if I can
indeed, sometimes I get the idea that I come off as if I could do it better when I give critique, but that is not the case or how I feel about it O.o and then there is indeed the risk of the person not taking it well D:

I think you come off just fine. After all, someone that really didn't care probably wouldn't take the time to also mention the GOOD things about a piece along with the critique.

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to AndromedaDualitas [2015-08-02 20:12:58 +0000 UTC]

really? ah glad that I don't sound that way !
yeah I think that a good critique points out both the good and the bad things, if you only point out the bad and don't really give feedback on how to improve it, it's kinda bashing really O.o

Yes! Exactly! Those kinds are really scary, but a fair critique is always nice.

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to AndromedaDualitas [2015-08-05 17:45:12 +0000 UTC]

indeed, it can be unhelpful instead of helpful if people bring it so harshly in my opinion XD but it is indeed scary to get critique on something you've made. I remember how intimidating my art teacher could be, she had a high standard and often critiqued the work of students, but more in a way to help them improve their work. I learned quite a bit during her lessons, though some of her critique was unclear or even annoying at times XD

AndromedaDualitas In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2015-08-05 17:57:01 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, yes, that sounds like my dad, he's always so straight-forward it's scary to show him my art, but I guess that harsh critique can also be helpful to build a "thick skin" as they say. And I find that a lot of critique can seem unclear or annoying at first when you can't see what the other person sees, and it's only when you try their recommendations that you see; "Gosh! I'm so dumb! How did I miss that!?" so I find that it's best to try and do some improvements first before jumping to aggressive defense. I actually haven't yet had a case where something someone mentioned /hasn't/ been helpful in some way.

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to AndromedaDualitas [2015-08-05 18:17:04 +0000 UTC]

yeah you are very true there, it indeed helps to build a thick skin it isn't always nice to get straight forward critique, but it can help. but there is still that line of what is actually critique and what is bashing something I had to learn is to not feel attacked and get the idea that they disapprove the entire drawing when someone critiques my drawings. that is sometimes my first reaction, so I had to put those feelings down a little and listen to what they where saying
ah yeah I had that sometimes, though I do sometimes second certain critique I get. I mainly have this when people critique not the techniques, but what is drawn. I think that has more to do with personal preference and taste then actually being a flaw. XD

ah that's very good to hear! :'D glad to see someone who is really open to critique, attitude and the willingness to learn and improve is something I don't often see anymore XD

AndromedaDualitas In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2015-08-08 08:51:56 +0000 UTC]

It can sometimes be just that someone knows how to draw, but don't know how to teach, which is an entirely different skill all in itself.Β
I think the difference is that harsh critique is when someone is harsh, but still raises valid points, and bashing is just "OMG THIS SUCKS!!!one!one!!" with nothing constructive to say.
Yeah, that's the hardest part, unfortunately. I was actually even worse, I used to feel that critiques were like an insult to me personally, not just the drawing I did.
Thankfully, since I started doing that "try things first, get offended later" thing I mentioned before, I'm way better at controlling myself.
I agree with that too! My dad does this with pointy ears, he's always like "They look so ugly! Why do you keep doing them?", but he never mentions if I'm doing them right or not, he just doesn't like them, so yeah, personal preference. Β

Yeah, that seems to be kinda rare on dA. D: But so are people that actually give out meaningful critique.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to AndromedaDualitas [2015-08-08 17:55:17 +0000 UTC]

yeah indeed, those are two separate things.Β
hm you have a good point there. it is indeed still critique though really harsh O.o

yes I sometimes felt like too, I have that with criticism in general.

aye the pointy ears are a matter of taste, (I think they are very fitting and look cool C Β and isn't really a technical thing XD

indeed, in my case I am always careful not to critique someone who would full on hate me for it I guess it sort of is a downwards spiral :'D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AndromedaDualitas In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2015-08-15 03:54:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I guess it's a good idea to keep in mind that even if someone is overly blunt, they still took the time to help you, and that's to be appreciated.

Honestly, I haven't really thought about the difference between personal taste and the more technical things until you mentioned it, so thanks for that, too!

And that's why I'm more scared of giving critique than I am of receiving it, because, really, HOW can you know for sure if they'll take it well?! Especially out here on the internet!

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to AndromedaDualitas [2015-08-21 01:48:27 +0000 UTC]

aye indeed ^^

oh jaj no problem! euh I tend to overthink things sometimes XD

indeed O.O I haven't had it myself yet, but I heard a lot of cases of people being offended by criticism. I have to be honest though that I have seen plenty of poor criticism as well, and I mainly mean those Criticism widgets people can request; stuff that didn't make sense or where overly praising with no negatives while I saw plenty of room for improvement. though I don't have the guts to write one myself most of the time or I can't add anything to it Β

AndromedaDualitas In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2015-08-22 00:13:43 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I tend to overthink things too, but they just happen to be the completely wrong things.

Oh yes, I've seen tons of those on various forums, it makes you wonder how some people can be so stubborn. But yeah, the second is also right, gosh, art and art critique are so complicated.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to AndromedaDualitas [2015-08-22 01:34:22 +0000 UTC]

yeah I think it is good to be someone that stands still and thinks about stuff, but sometimes my mind goes overboard XD

indeed, stubborn-ness seems to be a general thing that keeps coming back on interactions on the web, for some reason when certain people get behind their computer they get this extreme attitude of always being right and no logic in the world will change it.Β
it indeed can be, though I think that critisism is a more general thing to get right, but views on art can get really deep and philosophical O.o

AndromedaDualitas In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2015-08-22 03:37:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh, come on, I'm sure there's no such thing as too much thinking.

Yes! Exactly! Personally, I'm just as awkward and nervous online as I am in real life, so I can't even begin to understand how they get that massive ego boost.
Oh dear, every time I hear anything philosophical my brain just gives up. I'm personally just happy to do what I like and let someone else argue whether it's art or not.

DaemoniumNocturnal In reply to AndromedaDualitas [2015-08-31 23:10:20 +0000 UTC]

euh sometimes :gigle:

yeah me too, I think that how I am online matches how I am in real life (though I probably wont use some complex words XD) I guess it is the safethy of being behind your pc, and not having that "direct feedback" when you say something meanΒ  Β

oh yeah I can relate ! XD

AndromedaDualitas In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2015-09-01 03:56:54 +0000 UTC]

If you say so!

Yeah, I guess that's it, but still, I mean, c'mon, you can still hurt REAL people's feelings with that, and it's just not nice! But haters gonna hate, I guess.

Well, okay, MAYBE philosophical people are doing TOO much thinking.

Yeah, that is true, but I've been playing Left 4 Dead 2 for quite a while, and people often say that it's community is toxic and playing with strangers is an awful idea, but besides one troll that decided to kill us all once, I really haven't seen much of that toxic community, so it's really weird.

yeah I guess it kinda depends on what area you live in, usually people from countries around you join cause of the connection. the online game I play a lot are killing floor 1 and 2. I met some pretty Meh people there

really? oh that is interesting, I rarely run into americans (did run into russians but sadly they usually can't speak english and this makes it difficult to cooperate with them)Β

AndromedaDualitas In reply to DaemoniumNocturnal [2015-09-07 19:54:47 +0000 UTC]

Yup! And it's really weird, too. I've met a Bulgarian only ONCE.
Or, well, I dunno, maybe I do play with people closer to me, but they're just all really good at English or something.
But yeah, that does make it quite hard, my brother has all kinds of horror stories about Russians in Dota 2.
