Yes, definitely!
When I was little, I used to scribble and doodle on everything. In the 80s the kids called it scribble-scrabble.
I don't know why, but I just enjoyed scribbling and putting crayons and colors on everything. Everyone had crayons and coloring books, and when I was a little kid Crayola was THE brand ya wanted. I thought it was normal that kids and everyone doodled, or did coloring books.
But, when I was 4 years old a 2nd grade girl always played with me, and she liked to draw, so she kept showing me how to draw cartoon flowers, but it was just scribbles, and I wouldn't personally consider it as "drawing". I would take my scribbles and take them to the adults and they were supposed to look at the pictures and guess what they were, or I would cry.
But, this one day, in the summer, she started to challenge me to draw things, so I did. Hers was better than mine, of course. Birds, dogs, cats, sharks, anything..
We both loved The Last Unicorn which we saw on cable TV which was a new thing in the 80s and recorded it from HBO on my dad's new high end VCR.
So, she said we should draw unicorns, and I agreed.
But, she could never get it right. Her cartoons kept looking like a rhinoceros, and she didn't draw the ears.Β
So, my turn came and I drew the ears, and also drew them correctly, with 1 behind the other.
She would draw the ears just next to each other which made no sense, and she was a picky person.
So, we both had several tries, and it just didn't look like a unicorn at all. Just a Rhino.
I knew something was wrong, or off, and I stood back a moment, and I thought about it. It's the nose. Something is wrong with the nose! Then, I realized the alicorn goes on the forehead and NOT the nose. So, I picked up my crayon, and drew it.
For a 4 year old kid, that's really mind blowing! But, also, when the girl, Jamie, saw it she was also blown away because I did something she couldn't! And, we stood there, looking at the cartoon of a unicorn head and it was ACTUALLY what it was supposed to be! A Unicorn!
Then, we showed the other kids, my little brother, and her 2 little siblings, whom were in diapers, and even they said: Unicorn!
Then, we took it into the kitchen to show our mothers, and at first they didn't believe us that I did it, and thought Jamie did it! But, we both said: No! Kandy (my childhood nickname) did it!
For the rest of the summer, I drew lots of horses and unicorns, and My Little Pony was also a new thing that was very popular. And, there was this new thing called 'magic markers" that looked like magic wands, and they were expensive and difficult to find anywhere to purchase. But, my grandmother got me some. For my birthday I got My Little Pony toys, and all kinds of crayons and "magic markers".
Then, when I started Kindergarten that September, because I just turned 5, I thought all kids could draw. But, on the first day I realized they couldn't. I drew a dog and people freaked out. Then, when I drew a unicorn the entire class surrounded me. I thought that was strange because I only drew a unicorns. Couldn't they?
Turns out, no... they couldn't...
