It's mostly Professor Westwood's fault, he wrote several of the dex entries and emitted to making some of them up.

Isn't Wailord half-whale, half-blimp?

I've been in more discussions trying to figure out cartoon whale physics than I care to admit.

If you actually run the numbers, Wailord would be less dense than air. None of the Pokedex entries talk about flying (in fact, they mostly focus on Wailord's ability to dive and to splash.) In the Japanese text, the 'float' in "Float Whale Pokemon" is more like a fishing float or a buoy, not levitation.

Even if Wailord is intended to be relatively light, I doubt it was ever intended to fly. Onix is also unusually light, and would be about as dense as styrofoam. I think the heights and weights were simply chosen without a lot of heavy thought put into them. Because, again, we're calculating the density of a cartoon whale.

Though to be honest, the smoke didn't kill an elephant but more as knock it out.
Still, two seconds?!Β

Wailord's mass if it has that weight and volume is less than that of air. IT CAN FLOAT.

It does make the fact that Fish Pokemon can fight on land much more credible, however.

To be fair, Wailord is supposed to be much lighter than it looks (basically the inverse to Wailmer, who weighs almost the same despite being rather small in comparison)

The Pokedex really does sound like it was written by children.Β  "Don't look into the hole in Shedinja's back or IT WILL STEAL YOUR SOUL!"Β  "Machamp can PUNCH 1000 TIMES IN TWO SECONDS!" "The burn from a Houndoom's flame never heals! EVER!"

GaiaMIX In reply to useraccount [2014-05-02 21:33:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, it basically is, (1995) Red, Leaf, and Blue are 11. Daisy (sister of Blue) was 14, Bill was 16, and Yellow from the manga was 8.

3 years later (1998) Silver, Kris, Ethan, and Lyra were also 11. Eusine is apparently on his 20's or 30's. But he does not write pokedex entries he is a Magician. (Mysticalman actually, but i think it's actually the same thing).

3 years pass (2001) ... again, May and Brendan are 12, Wally is 10, and Emerald from the manga is 8.

(2004) Lucas, Dawn, and Barry are 10. Riley and Cheryl are 20, Marley and Buck are 15, and Mira is 8.

(2007) Hilbert and Hilda are 15, Cheren is 16, Bianca is 14, N is 20 (but he's actually a Team Plasma King not a Dex Holder)

(2009) Nate, Rosa, and Hugh are 12, Hugh's little sister is 9, Yancy Nancy is 11, and Curtis Cristoph is 13 (but these two are Idols not Dex Holders) and Colress (scientist) is like 35 or something.

(2012) Calem and Serena are 17, Tierno and Shauna are 9, and Trevor is 8.

So yeah, most of them are kids. And for shipping, say, Shauna\Calem, you could set it when she is 14 and he's 22 and it becomes a bit less creepy. Or whatever.

Well, Wailord is that light because it is the FLOAT whale pokemon
Ponyta can learn bounce, and horses can already jump 5 to 6 feet, just add Pokemon magic and it makes sense
Alakazam... it is a psychic pokemon?
and Ghastly is made out of poison gas... so.

In order to grow, Larvitar needs to eat a large mountain.
You'd think there'd be less mountains in the PokΓ©mon universe if that were true.
And let's not even talk about Wailord's ability to breed with a Skitty.

the pokedex entry actually says an indian elephant. a couple of them do. there's one that says that larvitar eats mountains the size of "mount everest" then sleeps. um, would we run out of mountains? and would there even BE a mount everest? lol

And what about those ones that apparently steal children and crap? Where the hell did that come from?!!?

Driftloon does that, it's part of Japanese mythology, some versions of it are very malicious, but my personal favorite is where the spirit that carries off the children of battered of emotionally injured children to homes where they will be better loved and taken care of. It's part of their culture, but was a little lost in translation.
