Description Naguata

I sat in the front row of this Naguata performance at a Japanese Cherry Festival.

Nagauta (長唄?), literally "long song", is a kind of traditional Japanese music which accompanies the kabuki theater. They were developed around 1740. Influences included the vocal yōkyoku style used in noh theater, and instruments including the shamisen and various kinds of drums.

The shamisen, a plucked lute with three strings, is a very popular instrument in nagauta. Nagauta performers generally play the shamisen and sing simultaneously.

Mene said the kanji is correct, but it's pronounced nagauta.

Great photo! I can only imagine what the music sounded like and I wish that I could have heard it. How long did they perform for? Were they the only performers you heard at that festival?

Thank you for the link. I took a listen and I am a little familiar with this music. I've heard some of it in some ethnic music classes I've taken at school.
