Awwww, this is really nice! And I'm with you that the first three games in the series are my faves too. :3

Aww thank you! The first three are much better thought out!
Also I was left thinking (after the third game) about how the mysterious story of the talking animals and Don Paolos involvement/interest in that part of the story would be explained in the next game and nothing was explained!!!! (not sure if other people felt this but its been killing me since the fourth game- sorry for ranting!)

Don't worry, that's how I felt as well! After completing the third game I was super excited to see what would come next in the series. I felt really eager to find out about this mystery Luke wanted Layton to come help him solve. But then I picked up the movie, not knowing it was going to be a prequel and felt a little disappointed that none of what I wanted to see was going to be addressed. Of course there's still parts of the prequel trilogy I like as well, but I do wish they'd carried on with the events after the original trilogy instead.

YES!they built up the mystery throughout the third game and there was Luke's letter as well but instead of continuing they just stopped and left us wondering what happened!
It probably didn't help that the last two seemed a bit all over the place narrative wise (cough- surprise family connections- cough- world almost ending but it's not mentioned at all later in the first three games- cough) I definitely share your wish on them continuing the first trilogy though to be honest I'm staying hopeful and believing it might happen...(my dreams will be broken)

I'm glad you feel the same way about the last two games! I don't talk about it much, since fandom loves Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy, but all the over-the-top family drama didn't do it for me and all these massively magical things happening undermined so much of the first trilogy when you have it as a prequel instead of a sequel. And I know that PL3 had personal drama for Layton too, but back then it felt like just the right amount to me. I felt that I knew enough about Layton's history now and was ready to go back to games like the first two, where Layton & Luke are solving mysteries but not massively connected to them personally. By the end of the prequel trilogy they'd added so much drama into Layton's backstory that I was struggling to take it seriously.
Though I have to confess that, while the overall plot was silly ("A giant manatee fighting a drilling robot did it") I do have a soft-spot for PL4. Misthallery was a beautiful location to explore, the background characters were great and I did want to know how Layton & Luke met.

I agree that PL3 was perfect. It kept the mystery going till the very end and despite the fact Clive created a giant robot underground to destroy London which was a bit over the top it didn't go too far with the ridiculousness and you felt a real connection to the characters (I cried when Claire faded and I'm proud to admit it). All the first three inspired so much emotion for me as the player! I definitely agree that the last game was over the top (surprise family) although I was slightly glad that it was revealed Emmy was related to the Professor as I never managed to ship them (despite the massive amounts of people shipping them at the time) as I was still thinking of the Professor and Claire and their relationship.
I will admit to you that I did sort of love the 5th game despite the fact I guessed who it was the instant PL best friend was introduced in the past and I liked going back and forth between the times in the professor's life. Even though I hated the new 3d function and moving around, I felt it took away from the original art style used in the games and didn't match up with the animation scenes. I ts great to talk to someone about this by the way! Thank you!

Yeah, I really feel like PL3 knew what it was doing and managed to create a good story. While each of the PL games had their element of being over the top, to me it felt like the first three all managed to balance it well enough that you could suspend your disbelief. I still feel it was kind of a cop-out when PL6 pretty much went "magic is real", since earlier titles had managed to avoid that.
As for the Layton & Emmy ship, I have to admit that I did kind of like it to start with but it faded over time for me. Not actually because of any of the revelations in PL6 oddly enough, but when playing through Miracle Mask I just somehow stopped feeling like I could see their relationship on a romantic level. It's kind of hard to put into words as to why. As with all ships I bare no ill-will to the shippers and I do still like looking through nice fanwork of it, but I'm just not into it myself.
Yeah, PL5 did kind of forget it was a mystery game a lot, as most of the reveals were made obvious before the player has a chance to think for themselves. Especially when you have Randall holding the Masked Gentleman's mask right there in the trailer. It would have been nice if they'd thought outside the box a bit and maybe made that a red herring, but it's all said and done now. The jump to 3D was also quite jarring in that game, since the series gained some of its reputation on the beautiful style that the 2D games had. Though I do think that by PL6 they'd managed to get the 3D environments looking a lot better.
And yes, it's nice to have someone to talk to about the PL games critically. Thank you as well!

Hello again,
I am deeply sorry for not replying for so long. Personal stuff came up and I haven't been on deviant art for a while. Completely agree with the first three keeping it a bit more down to earth that the last three. I can't work out if it was the way it was revealed in the lost future as if you think about it the 4th game was actually a bit more believable in a way? Do you know if they only planned three and then decided due to popularity that they should do another series?
I kind of feel that that was the reason they created the mobile app as it didn't really have the feel of the Professor Layton games (at least the first three anyway) It was sort of like an add on to feed of the fan base, then again it was ok to play.
I see what your saying about Randall being the red herring! I actually spent the entire game thinking he was in the back of my head and it made me suspicious of nearly everyone else so I was slightly underwhelmed when it was in fact him!
I think the 3D was interesting but It ruined (strong words but I feel quite strongly about this) the feel and it felt a bit weird umping from the 3D to the 2D animation.
Bit wierd to end the comment like this but hope you are well and sorry again for the late reply!

Hey! Don't worry about it, that's no problem at all. I'm certainly not the sort of person to demand replies to anything. As for the disconnect between the two trilogies, you're lucky that you weren't able to get back to me earlier, as now I can give you a definite answer, where I wouldn't have been able to before. Recently The World of Professor Layton was translated into English and published by Udon, containing lots of interviews with the staff regarding the Layton series. It confirmed that they had intended to make three games to start with and that Pandora's Box was actually being worked on before they'd even finished Curious Village. The success of the series is what led to the second trilogy, so it hadn't been planned from the start. And speaking of not planned from the start, one interview also shows them admitting that they didn't plan the ending of the second trilogy until they were working on Miracle Mask, so that might explain why it feels like there's a massive disconnect between Descole's portrayals in Spectre's Call & Eternal Diva and in Miracle Mask & Azran Legacy.
As for the mobile apps, the only one I've played in Mystery Room and that definitely didn't feel like a PL game to me. I'm not sure WHY that game was tied to the Layton name, as it was clearly aimed at a more teenage demographic only, whereas the PL series was aimed more at people from eight-to-eighty years old. I can hardly imagine some of the very young or very old PL fans enjoying Mystery Room that much. But then again, originally that game was going to be it's own title and was changed at the last minute to be tied into PL instead. I kind of wish they'd kept it as its own thing.
Yeah, they did get the 3D looking a lot better in PL6, but it never managed to have the charm that the 2D animation did. Another thing they admitted in the book I mentioned was that they felt they didn't do the best job with the 3D in Miracle Mask, because they were rushing to meet a deadline. And I can only completely agree with them that the poor quality of the 3D in that game shows.
Anyway, thanks for the reply and I hope that everything gets better for you soon!
