Pretty cool. I'm actually surprised Christianity never became more popular in Japan. Their culture seems to have compatible values, and they could have adapted it to resemble Shinto. Maybe they misunderstood and thought it was only a religion for white people...?

Catholicism was gaining a lot of ground before it was persecuted. That's usually how it goes - it gains ground, is seen as a threat, and is violently persecuted. You might want to look into Jesuits in Japan - I think there was a Jesuit Catholic presence there.

Yes, I remember reading something about Portuguese Jesuit missions in Japan, although I admit I didn't research the matter very thoroughly, as it was only a recreational study.
