Description The Sea-Critter sculpted!

This is just the initial sculpt. No horns, teeth, fins or hair have been attached yet. I'm going to mold him next in a sturdy poly foam then sculpt the horns/teeth/fins separately. After attaching those ( they will probably be made from super sculpey, or possibly two part plastic? ) I will paint the piece. Painted and spiny things attached - he will then receive hair!

Worka worka worka!

Here was my initial concept design and how I hope for him to turn out: [link]

Great detail, excellent work. You're getting better and better at sculpting

It's looking great. I can totally see where you're going with this. What type of color palette will you use? Are you going to match the concept drawing a precisely as you can or "deviate." Sorry about the bad joke. Keep me posted.

I'm considering the color palette of green/blue beta fish. I am going to attempt to match my concept drawing as much as possible but if I see a need for change during the process I'm going to make it

actually I like the way this turned out as is. the holes look a lot like barnacles which gives it that sea-critter-like feel. But looking at your initial design for this piece I could see it looking just as good fully completed.

Have you thought about making maybe a plaster mold or rubber mold of this piece? I could see a nice series deriving from this initial unfinished piece, such as different overall designs.

Great work though. What type of material did you use? It looks like water based or oil clay.

I am molding the piece today/tmrw, and it will be made out of rubber. It will be very thick, not meant to be worn. More of a character head which will have a base.

I have a lot ahead of me, all of the teeth and horns have to be individually sculpted, molded, attached and painted. In the end the critter here will have no open holes in his face, just his nostrils

I used WED clay, it was a pain in the ass. I would suggest Chavant for anyone trying to do this next time.

Yes, it does sound like you have a lot ahead of you. Do you mainly sculpt for a class or do you do this during your free time?

I kind of do both but mainly during my class time. We mainly use water based clay but since my teacher has grown more accustomed to my style he supplied me with Plasticine clay and wants me to go more into detail with my pieces.

I'm not really comfortable with the new material, though it never dries out and smooths out great. Best for making mold which I plan to do next semester.

I can't wait to see your piece finished. As of now it looks fantastic and has me a little jealous that my skills are still lacking.

I sculpted this for a class but after hes finished ( did the mold today and its all done ) I plan on creating one in my free time for myself.

I enjoy Chavant more than WED myself.

Never be jealous, as artists we are always learning. I sucked 5 months ago and I am still nowhere near the best sculptures out there. Part of the fun is learning and figuring out new ways to make the best piece!

Thank you for the kind words, I hope the finished piece turns out as well!

For your class? Man, if you are showing that type of talent then I can't begin to imagine the pieces your fellow classmates made.

That's true but there's always going to be a tinge of jealousy. Though we work with models in our class I never sculpt for realism but more on the fantasy side, just like your piece. I love how fantasy-ish it looks. The fact that you might be using multiple mediums, believe you said sculpy for the horns and teeth, right?

At the moment I have two pieces I'm currently working on, a life-size arm and a candle holder. I would like your feedback on the pieces if you don't mind looking at them, they are on my page.
