Description Freshly cropped grass pricked my bare arms,
poking through the back of my shirt
as I stared up at the clouds above –
giant feathers in the sky.

Leaves from the nearby copse of trees
whistled with the passing wind,
stalks of missed grass waving gently.
Hammering sounds from a woodpecker
thudded against my ear drum,
followed by the lone twitter of a robin.

Other sounds reached my ears:
the distant soft whickers and neighs,
the whuff of breath,
the rip of grass pulled from the roots,
the soft drums of hooves vibrating along the ground –

There was a thump and I felt
a velvet warmth nudge my chest,
the sweet smell of leather and hay succumbing.
Her shadow hid the sun’s rays from my face,
only to fade away as I turned to watch:
front legs bending,
muffled thuds to the ground,
hind quarters following as her sleek body settled,
the grass becoming our bed.

My hand reached over,
fingers running through hair
like silk and longer than any other.
My palm brushed against the soft coat
and through the corner of my eye,
the sunlight shimmered
off the deep mahogany coat.

With deep light breaths like sheep,
my eyes closed,
but another pair stayed open,
watching over the sea of green.
