Let me start out by saying getting pictures of small bugs in macro is very difficult! So well done on geting this picture.
You captured the bug pretty well. You can see it's eyes and you can distinguish it's colors with ease. It's a bit out of focus though. You should either try to focus more on the bug or at least the face.
The background is what is hurting the picture. It is a great color choice o show the bug, but it is very dull. It seems like just a plain green piece of paper. When keeping it out of focus, try to add some visible shapes in there, at least, so their is more to the picture. Maybe of some leaves or grass, or wherever this was taken. Also, try to also focus on the thing the bug is clutching on to. That would help focus on the bug, too!
But, overall, this is a great picture, especially for someone who is new with macro. I can see great potential in your work!

A very interesting photo. Sometimes with macro, the results end up being much different than you expect.
My only advice is to be patient and experiment with the focus. A LOT.

having the right camera makes it more fun as well. unfortunately, the "right" camera is usually expensive.

Good point. Manual focus is what I need to look into.

It's soooo hard. I went on holiday to The Veluwe in my own country. I practiced for 1,5 weeks with my macrolens on mushrooms, leafs and insects. Manual focus sucks, but that might also be because I can't see that well. But I tried all kinds of things. I need more practice because many images were unsharp. I hope some are good enough.
I might invest in a macro tripod if I want to get more serious, and some other things like maybe a windshield.

i would think that a macro tripod would be tricky to use when trying to photograph insects. the ones i photo seldom allow me to get too close- they all fly or run away.
dont give up trying. practice is the only way we get better.

I tried a regular tripod and that sucked. You're not free to move for a better composition. Someone said a beanbag works better. I won't give up trying, it's a wonderful and beautiful branche of photography.

hmmm, beanbag? good idea. i never thought of that. i did find they make tiny tripods, but that beanbag sounds better. a little more mobile

Those tiny tripods can be very expensive. The ones where the legs spread xD
There are a lot of beanbags on the market. I think you usually have to fill them up yourself, but I wonder what the best product is. Rice, beans or sunflower seeds.

Sorry for the late reply... I kinda tend to do that on dA There was a time when I spend all day on here, now there's Facebook, hehe.
There's a list of 14 items with tips on how to improve your photography. One of those is to take your camera everywhere. That's kind of hard when you have several lenses. I'm really not sure if macro is the right thing for me. I might sell my lens. Or maybe I'm just an idiot and I have to practice A LOT more.
