Description Here is the commission piece I've been working on for the past ten months. Here it is 99.9% compelte. The icon is about 3 x 4 ft. in size. The central figure is St. Bede. He is surrounded by ornamentation from the Book of Kells, the monasteries of Jarrow and Wearmouth, and inset icons of Sts. Aidan of Lindisfarne, Hilda of Whitby, and Cuthbert. Bede is illuminated from above by Christ the Morning Star, just as Bede referenced in his famous work "The Ecclesiastical History of the English People," which he is shown here writing.

Medium: acrylic and gold leaf on gessoed cloth and board.

Hi Angelo Red.
Is it possible to use this image on a poster I'm producing for church purposes, So far I've done one for every book in the Bible and this would be additional to that, with posters on other great men of the faith here in the UK.

So far I've done John Wycliffe, Chaucer, Tyndale, JB Phillips etc. and I was hoping to use/ purchase the use of your excellent painting. Is that possible? and how much would it cost, sadly I don't have much of a budget

I've found a nice sized image of it so you don't need to necessarily supply anything, the size is only going to be A3. All I really need is an okay and how much to see if I can afford it. FYI, I'm getting about Β£100 per poster and I have to source images from that but your painting is so lovely i really would like to use it if I can, it must have taken you ages.

If you say yes, I'd be delighted, if not I just want to say I love it anyway, you have a rare talent and I look forward to seeing your work in the future.Β

Best regards

Sorry I got your name wrong, I didn't notice predictive text altered it. I'm still looking to use your image as a royalty free image for one of the A3 Church posters I am producing and I'm happy to pay a fee for usage. If this is not possible please let me know.

Many thanks

I love this work. Would you be interested in making prints of it? St. Bede is one of my favourite saints I would love to have a copy of this.

That's very interesting iconography! Is it commisioned by a church?

Yes, this was commissioned by St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Atlanta, GA. This will hang in the naive to the left of the main altar.

In many similar pictures, I see the persons depicted as touching their thumb to their third finger. What is the significance of this?

There are two tradition signs of blessing for the Orthodox Church that I know of that have been used for at least 1500 years as if evidenced in the earliest icons. I have heard two meanings for the one used in this icon. In one, the first two fingers signify the two natures of the Christ incarnate which is fully human and fully divine, while the thumb, fourth and fifth finger represent the Trinity. The second meaning is that the first two fingers represent the two natures of the Christ, and the other three form the greek letters chi and rho "XP" that are the first two letter of Christ in greek: Christos. As for the symbolism behind the thumb to the middle finger, I am not entirely sure, though it is very prevelant in iconography.

It would appear that Wikipedia (source of all knowledge)has a good article on this and explains the other sign representing "IC XC." [link]

This is class stuff, I do elements from the gospels now and again in acrylic, this (your level) is what I aspire to.
