Hi - do you remember the aperture of this short? I really enjoy the bokeh.

angelcurls In reply to kimnorgaard [2006-02-12 11:15:36 +0000 UTC]

was 150mm @ f4 on a 6x6 bronica, but i really dont like technical questions, because they are so obvious to see in every picture. nothing you should ask for though. i mean you wouldnt get the bokeh on other settings, right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kimnorgaard In reply to angelcurls [2006-02-12 14:50:30 +0000 UTC]

I disagree. The apature especially isn't something that you can easily read out of a picture. Sure, you can tell if it's wide or narrow. I would have guessed "something in the range of 2.8-7.1" of which 2.8, 3.0 and 3.5 would probably have created a similar bokeh.

I'm not saying that knowing the variables makes anyone a better photographer per say, but it might help in developing a knowledge base.

Anyway, what's the problem with sharing?

Oh, and I enjoy the rest of the photo too, though I'd probably have let in a bit more light to bring out just a tiny bit more detail in the shadows. Also, did you try a shot with her not looking directly into the camera? Sortof a more voyouristic shot.

angelcurls In reply to kimnorgaard [2006-02-12 16:20:55 +0000 UTC]

well, 2.8 ist completely different from 7.1 though. i dont have a problem with sharing, i just think there are other questions as which aperture someone used. its just that i'm not such a fan of technical things.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kimnorgaard In reply to angelcurls [2006-02-15 11:53:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, the difference isn't all that huge if you compare different lenses. 150mm at f/7.1 isn't all that different from 50mm at f/3.5 or 4.0 DoF wise. The bokeh is different, tho'. Apart from that I agree that the technicalities doesn't make the photo, but I'm interrested in both - hence the question

smoke is one of those things that reacts very well to light. we cant help but see this as sexy, perhaps because of its mere aesthetic beauty but also because of the risk. we know that cigarette smoke kills, and yet it holds an allure for the human mind.

very good studio set up here.

to paulkun, i can only say, ikea desk lamps have saved me in the passed when i've needed answers to lighting.

ill be checking out the rest of your gallery.

What lighting/environment was set-up here? I really would like to try something similar.
I have to say i love the pose and positioning, the smoke effects are excellent too, contrasts are spot on.

I am not too fond however of the focus, i find it a little odd really. The right side of her face is quite is focus but the left side is not, the close distance between them makes me wonder; This effect was done on purpose? Why..?

The smoke is quite clear and sharp, but her arm is completly out of focus, was the smoke moving towards you? Or was this done in Photoshop?.
Sorry for all the questions but im just a little baffled. Also, the "78 Fav's, 48 Comment's suck! Comeon deviants, FAVS are worthless! Comments are worth something!

Well done

angelcurls In reply to Paulkun [2005-11-21 17:13:28 +0000 UTC]

one light from right behind and one (reduced light) asland above the head. thats all.

the focus is just because i used a 150mm lense with a small fstop. and yes, her hand is behind the smoke. also the hand is deeper than the smoke because the perpective looks a bit down on her. there is nothing done in photoshop. its exactly like on the 6x6 negative.

and youre right, comments are worth more than favs, but sometimes people just like the picture and to klick the fav button is much better than to have 50 comments a la "nice picture".

Hmm thats really interesting. What kind of lights are they? I really want to start playing around wth this stuff, but im very broke :[
wow! I have to say, major kudos this being the original negitive! Very neat indeed, and great skill, truly.

"Nice picture", bah i hate comments like that, why even bother commenting? Thats just how i feel about it :]
Again, great work.

angelcurls In reply to Paulkun [2005-11-24 23:36:03 +0000 UTC]

im really not interested on technical aspect, so dont ask me what lights i use. i know how to set up them and how to set up my camera, but i have no clue what exactly is inside my equipment. i'm more the photographer, not the manual reader.
and also you wouldnt believe how bad exposed the negative was.

Paulkun In reply to angelcurls [2005-11-25 00:02:13 +0000 UTC]

I am just wondering what type of light you are using, as i really don't know too much about it

Beautiful, makes me think of the classical portraits Cecil Beaton used to take. It's got a great mood to it. Could I ask what you had as background?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

angelcurls In reply to Vegetya [2005-11-21 17:15:26 +0000 UTC]

background was a simple black roll of paper on two tripods. thanks for commenting.

great shot and instant fav!! i abolutely love the smoke, plus i know how hard it is to get good results with it at dark light setup! just the grid on the nose and the cheek is attracting too much attention in my opinion. my view gets let to it very quickly, so this is a detail id try to soft a bit with PS afterwork. but thats another topic. analoge photography ist best and your photo shows great skill with that.
