Description

Daniel could hear that Edward hadn't gone to bed yet. The strange little man still sat by the window, trying to sponge off the injures on his arm. It wasn't working, and judging by the occasional yelps and nervous giggles, the bruises were still fresh.

Daniel rolled over and sat up. He could make out the thin silhouette against the moonlight staring hard at his forearm. As his eyes adjusted, the teenager also noticed the bandages Edward wore at all times were folded on the table. He had never gotten a good look at the man's scars before, but there were more then he would have guessed.

He was also finally able to notice how the scar that went from Edward's finger and past his thumb stretched all the way up his forearm. It wasn't hard to imagine it going up his arm and connecting to the one from his forehead down his neck.

"Mr. Otto?" He asked quietly.

The little man jumped.

"How did you get that scar, if you don't mind me asking?"

"It's not a scar." Edward said with an odd, worried smile. "It's many scars. Couldn't tell you if I tried. There's too many now."

Daniel shuffled closer. "Were they all at once? Or..."

"Long time. Long time. Accidents mostly. A few unfriendly creatures. Accidents mostly."

As Daniel traced the lines with his eyes, he noticed something else, too. "Mr. Otto, you're shaking."

"It's the dark. Too dark. Don't like the dark." He looked out the window. "Moonlight, like that. It's nice. It's bright. It's not dark."

"I think you need to go to bed."

"When it's not dark."

Daniel knew there was nothing he could do, so he let the man be.
