You know, as much as I like comics, and as much as you've reduced Bill's opinion to an indefensible position, I have to believe the vast majority of people who will consider themselves reasonable, responsible and mature are going to come down on Bill Maher's side of the argument.Β Stan Lee himself mentioned numerous times how awkward he felt as a younger man meeting new people and trying to hide behind the fact that he worked as either a "magazine editor" or as a publisher of "children's literature," both of which he knew were a step up from what he actually did.Β He may have created a million memorable characters, and entertained billions of people, but ultimately, his work is going to fall short of literature, and the guys who worked for him are going to fall short of artists (they were great graphic designers and illustrators, and you can use "art" if you want, but I'm in their same boat -- though much less great -- and I would never try to define myself as an "artist").Β Additionally, I feel like Stan is responsible in large part for America being mired in the stagnation that results in 95% of the graphic work coming out of this country being of the Superhero genre (stupidly stupid crap), and the fact that almost every movie Hollywood invests the big money in these days comes from a comic book source -- and I find it almost impossible to watch an American movie right now.Β I'm pretty sure you've noticed they're all terrible.
I'm one of the only people I know who still buys comic books (even most of the artists and writers I occasionally hang out with in real life seem to not buy them: they go to movies), but I'm yet to find a comic book that can engage the way a great book can.Β I think when the pictures are provided by someone else, you find yourself one step removed from being completely immersed in the author's creation (and the best written graphic novels don't even need the pictures).Β But maybe that's just me.Β Anyhow, sure, not difficult to hate Bill Maher, because he does seem to be a pretty big jerk (ranting dramatics bring in the eyeballs), but I don't think he's entirely wrong about this.

Peter David, Gail Simone and Neil Gaiman all had some good responsex to Bill and his two tirades. As I pointed out in another pic here on DeviantArt, he tends to pick his spots and not appear on shows tbat will actually question his viewpoints.
I did enjoy when Ice Cube came on his show to straighten his ass out. I also enjkyed when Larry Wilmore eas on there and called out Milo on his bullshit when Bill wouldn't.

Ah! I meant to type this earlier but I don't think Marvel movies are bad because they're based on comic books. I don't think the Superhero genre is inherently poison.
I do that those movies are very cookie cutter. They're all about "becoming a team" and beating up the bad guy. It's not one artists's vision, it's like they're all movies made on a conveyor belt.
I think there's a reason we mentally categorize the Sam Raimi Spider Man movies differently than the Avengers Cinematic Universe stuff.

Thanks for this.
I definitely agree that Marvel Movies are trash. I haven't been entertained by one since the first Iron Man, with the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy. Black Panther was okay but the euphoria quickly wore off.
Youd know more than me about comics because I don't read comics very often. Interesting point about if other people illustrate them it's one step removed from the author's vision.
I disagree that I reduced Bill Maher's position to something indefensible, because his point was (I thought, anyways) Β "only words=good and mature" and "pictures and words=for babies and dumb idiots and possibly the reason Trump was elected". What more to his argument am I missing?Β

You were not unfair to Maher.Β Maher probably doesn't know that people who read comics are FAR more likely to have read "real" books than people who don't read comics.Β This is a "fact" I've seen reported in several places and I choose to believe it because it describes my daughter and myself.Β What Maher should've said in defense of literature is that more people need to read real books.Β Period.
From what I see of the contents in comics these days?Β No one who reads them voted for Trump.Β Comics ARE the language of artists, and 99% of them are liberals.Β If you go to a comic store and pick up a random selection of 20 - 30 comics, 15 - 28 of them will have lesbian make-out scenes in them and three quarters of the characters in them will be black, Hispanic, gay, female, physically challenged people.Β Comics are so invested in diversity that the people who want to believe our problems can be solved with an explosion and an exchange of fists?Β Will no longer come near them: of this I am sure.Β Free Comic Days have assured me of the fact that comics are the language of misfits.Β I think comics need to be mainstream in order to save the medium from extinction, but the people who make them don't seem to see this as a concern.
Also: a lot of non-superhero movies are also based on comics and graphic novels.Β For example: "Atomic Blonde," and "Noah," were both CRAPPY graphic novels before they were turned into crappy movies.Β And if you look into sources for most of the "blockbusters" being made these days, you will find a "graphic" source at its core.Β It's all very sad.
On a side note, I'm reading the "real" book "Adjustment Day," by Chuck Palahniuk right now (he wrote "Fight Club,") and if you want to read a seriously disturbing take on politics, media, news, the internet and social networks, that's the book for you.

AngryMaxFuryStreet In reply to TheLaughingGiant [2018-11-19 21:56:40 +0000 UTC]
I mean I don't know his whole historyThen but he was one of those smug contrarian atheists on TV in 2006 who made fun of fundamentalist Christians up to and including George W Bush, which was cool and also obvious.
His super atheism puts him at odds with Islam so he bought into the anti Islam hysteria hook line and sinker, and in typical Sam Harris fashion has nothing to say when you bring up that America contributed strongly to spreading fundamentalist Islam in that part of the world.
He also hates trigger warnings and content warnings because they censor the content (I still haven't figured out how that works) and he thinks college kids are big babies because they're afraid of edgy comedians like Jerry Seinfeld.
So he's a registered Democrat, but he's also an out of touch Baby Boomer who doesn't like what the millennials are doing, and also desperately trying to stay relevent, and also sucks up to the "intellectual dark web" geniuses like Milo and Sam Harris.Β
So thats his politics. Significantly more boring than Alex Jones lol Alex Jones is fucking fascinating.

The one thing fascinating about the Jones Toad is his weird
fixation on gay frogs. I guess since gay frogs are the happiest
creatures on Earth and he's stuck with the Cheeto Monkey not
knowing why he's so unhappy. Probably jealousy over those frogs.

Bill is kicking the dead as he knows Stan can't fight back. What a cowardly bastard.

Ok first of all I actually highly doubt he never read a comic book, because Bill Maher whole generation had only 3 things to do for fun as kids.
The first thing was read comic books, the second was watch TV (where there was only 6 fuckin channels and only 1 of them was interesting to kids), and the last thing was actually go outside with friends (no way Bill Maher had friends if he's this pompous and snooty as an adult lol. I like to think people evolve as they get older. Imagine TEENAGE Bill Maher. No way he had friends. No way)
Is this all inductive reasoning? Hell yes it is! But it's also Bill Maher so I don't care

Bill Maher is a butthole. I used to like him, to. His edgy religious commentary was something I identified with (I still kind of do) but it became pretty clear that he thrives on publicity gained by artificially created controversy, which makes him about as good as Fox News. There's legitimate stuff to critique about Stan Lee, too, but he sure didn't do it. Also it's hypocritical to call anything childish and also claim to be a libertarian (does he still claim that)?

I was a big fan of Maher's back in the Bush years. He seemed to have this ability to verbalize my frustrations towards Dubya and the Republican party in general. He opened up the world of satire to me like never before. But I never did quite like his condescendence to his audience. His friendship with Ann Coulter was equally perplexing. As the years went on, I outgrew him. Looking at this opinions on the Muslim community in recent years, I was definitely better off for outgrowing him. His snark towards Stan Lee was just the cherry on the garbage barge. The fact that he's equated Stan Lee's legacy to the rise of Donald Trump just shows me he wasn't worth my fandom.
Still don't know how I'm going to get rid of my Bill maher collection at this point :/
