Recently my art got some unexpected exposure while I was travelling in Japan. While I feel happy for my art I have to admit it spooked me quite a bit. Every time I think about other people seeing my artwork I feel just scared to paint. When I was just starting out I thought this fear would disappear overtime with experience but nope. The fear is here to stay. I had to chip away at this painting little by little like showing up at the gym. This workhorse mentality seems to work for me. I can't rely on fairy dust to swoop in and let me glide through every piece. I keep painting and check my colors, values, composition and line rhythms like a pragmatic scientist. And often like here the creativity eventually comes in and let's me enjoy the painting because it feels meaningful and fulfilling. I've edged open the heavy safe door to the idea that got me on this path and there's the destination. It's thrilling and it makes wading through all those bad design choices worth it. I'm probably never going to be a super famous artist and that's completely fine. I don't do this stuff because of the exposure. I do it despite it. Because I love painting more than I'm scared of the people looking at it.

This is partly why I sometimes do silly paintings. To remind myself it's not that serious. (also let's face it; I'm kind of a silly person anyway)

This painting is about a dream I had where I'm travelling on foot through an endless night to this island so I can bring one person a bucket of moonlight. I didn't ask him to come along because i was afraid he'd say no but I'm going anyway. I want the people I love to have all the moonlight in the world
