Description I favourited this photograph [link] some time ago as I was struck by the beauty of both the composition and the model. So it is with great thanks to its progenitor and fellow Deviant, d212 [link] , who kindly gave me permission to render and publish this as a vector illustration, that I present the lovely Lane gazing a timeless stare across an unknown vista.

For those who like to know, It was created entirely in Illustrator CS5, using the mesh tool to the max, with minor support by straight line work and the Wacom tablet.

If you like the end result, let me know why. If you don't... keep it to yourself

Oh, and while I'm at it, here's a section of the wireframe for you to enjoy too... [link]

You serious? My English is bad but I understand correct this is not photo manipulation but is all done on computer drawing? Soon will not need model!!! All can just be done on computer! Lucky I retire from model already! Yulia

Thank you Marcus.

That couch was a real pain to get right, especially with the changing depth of field on the damask covering. It's always nice when someone picks up on the finer details of what it takes to produce complex vectors that do justice to the original image.

marshallpro In reply to AngstromAlliance [2012-09-16 12:25:18 +0000 UTC]

Well to some it maybe "miner details", but the "finer or miner" details are the ones that complete the image. I knw a few people the work with vectors frequently( I myself,But...*scuff*...not at that level)and it's not as straight 4ward as some may think it iz!!

AngstromAlliance In reply to marshallpro [2012-09-16 16:18:57 +0000 UTC]

I agree, vectors are seldom straight forward, regardless of how complex they are. They all need thinking out and executing accurately.

Sitting here with our friend and have to say elements like the shoes remind us of Jessica Rabbit - is it our perception or is that how the photo was. I'm really not sure about this perhaps the photo was already very manipulated. Your vector may do justice but doesn't do it for us. Sorry

AngstromAlliance In reply to Kapyco [2012-09-15 23:39:30 +0000 UTC]

Well I thought I'd let this one breathe a while as I considered the best way to respond to this thoughtful posting. The only conclusion I can draw is this was some cruel attempt to undermine what I am trying to achieve as a practitioner of the vector arts, or these words are the product of dipsomaniacal or drug-addled thinking.

At best, if you see traces of Jessica Rabbit, you may be experiencing some kind of macular degeneration, in which case, a referal to an oculist is imperative.

The vast majority of people who post here have an appreciation or working knowledge about the various artforms on display. This invective laced diatribe may mask some deeper seated issues that should be addressed through counselling or therapy.

The good news is, if you are thinking of making a career change in the near future, you have all the traits and characteristics to be very succesful in marketing

Thanks Frank, good to hear from you.

Yeah, I got the result I was looking for, which was pleasing. It turned out to be far more complicated than I reckoned on. It took ages to get the necklace how I wanted, though it just doesn't show up here - and that couch sent me boss-eyed.

Here's the dilemma, do you produce true vector that works when viewed at 6000%+, or something that just looks good on screen for people to enjoy looking at?

As you have pointed out in the past, nobody pays us for producing these, so how much time can you honestly justify on nailing details that will never be truly appreciated?

Problems, problems.

frankwyte81 In reply to AngstromAlliance [2012-09-19 04:34:28 +0000 UTC]

You did a fantastic job, I can tell some those sections were difficult.

I been working a lot lately, hopefully I'll have time to finish the vectors I've been working on. Anything you produce with the mesh tool is a true vector. I printed a few of mine out and they look great, but a disclaimer, the biggest print I did was 24x36, but it still look good. As for the time to justify, that depends on the person, if you have available time, go for it. I'm putting about 30-40 hours in mine going forward.

AngstromAlliance In reply to frankwyte81 [2012-09-19 08:18:46 +0000 UTC]

Hi Frank. It must be great to see your work printed out as it makes the artwork 'real'. I've been doing some work for a friend of mine and have tried to convince her my Ample Charms vector would look great filling her 16-year-old son's bedroom wall.

She reckons she already has enough trouble getting him out of his room as it is

frankwyte81 In reply to AngstromAlliance [2012-09-21 20:01:57 +0000 UTC]

Lol, that's funny. I wonder what that 16 year old is doing in there? Lol. Yeah, printing your work adds an extra layer to the work you put in, it's nice to see it in print. You should go for it, print it anyway and convince her to buy it .

Which of your pieces did you print, and where are you thinking of displaying them - around your home or to advertise your skills?

AngstromAlliance In reply to Aplos [2012-09-12 12:37:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Andreas. Some pictures lend themselves to trying to define every pore, but the lighting and the subject this lent themselves to a softer approach.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Fate16 [2012-09-12 11:00:47 +0000 UTC]

As much as I like the softness of the photo compared to the original. The deletion of her curly hair running down her back really kills it, but only after you view the original. but either way its a good alteration. Now just work on some of your own

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AngstromAlliance In reply to Fate16 [2012-09-12 12:41:12 +0000 UTC]

It's a subject of debate whether to aim for absolute photo realism, or use a little artistic license as it is an illustration, after all. After spending countless hours trying to get things like the material on the seat and the necklace how I wanted them, I couldn't justify the extra time on a full hair job.

That's where the artistic license comes in

very nice! with a bit more light play and texture to her ankles and the floor boards, this would be nearly photographic

AngstromAlliance In reply to ocelot99992003 [2012-09-12 12:46:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Tyler. It's like I said on Fate16's posting - it boils down to time in the end, so I have to judge what I think passes muster on artistic merit, even if that does mean forsaking that absolute photographic look.

I understand. I've commissioned a few sculptures and I've also photographed weddings. Both are not quite the tempo I'm looking for when I imagine art.
