They seem f-ing tired or bored. :-P
Maybe except the mustached one, in the second rank.

I wish I could do the caliber or work that you do. There's just so much attention to those little historical details and the funny faces...don't even get me started on the shading. WHY ARE CLOTHING WRINKLES SO HARD TO SHADE!

I think that explains why it's been difficult.

Alright a World War I pic. I think World War I gets short changed nowadays. Without it there is no sequel of World War II. And yet always gets ignored. So 28th IR? Not sure what that means. I always thought of the 28th Bavarian Regiment personally.

Sorry to intervene...
Infanterie-Regiment von Goeben (2.Rheinisches) Nr. 28, so it was Prussian.

Actually there were only 23 Bavarian infantry regiments in WW1.

Once again a brilliant work - shading, detail, easter eggs - your artwork reminds me of another great cartoonist - Bill Mauldin.

Love your art!

The fat officer kinda reminds me of Corporal Himmelstoss

You mean Sergeant Himmelstoss ^^ (german word for Feldwebel is Sergeant)

And yes, he reminds a little of that Fool, but I think the shown Mans face is a bit softer then that of Himmelstoss.

HarlemStride [2010-06-07 08:50:50 +0000 UTC]

This must have taken you days to draw - the detail is really superbly done. For some reason I am stuck on the brick work on the wall, it came out very well, I can see the texture on the bricks. I love the shading on the faces and the uniforms, particularly on the one next to the NCO with his pinky in the air. He is trying to put on the brave face, I see. His buddy next door doesn't seem to be so confident in this war.

Also I am impressed by the perspective on the building. Buildings are hard! but the angles on the roof and wall are just right. Did you use reference shots for the building work, too?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngusBurgers In reply to HarlemStride [2010-06-07 12:41:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I did use a reference for the background, I'm not that good yet!

Still, I would say that's pretty good! I commend thee for thy mad perspective drawing skills, with or without photo references.

Incredible work,really awesome.
One thing, not to be hatred, the bayonet of germans was a knife not napoleonic.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngusBurgers In reply to XanderXVII [2010-05-15 21:31:14 +0000 UTC]

Sorry to pop your critic bubble, but they are captured Russian Mosin Nagant rifles with their bayonets, so there is absolutely no inaccuracy in this picture.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

XanderXVII In reply to AngusBurgers [2010-05-15 21:40:40 +0000 UTC]

You have reason because Mosin Nagant have had bayonet of that type(until 1944!), but the 28. Rgt Von Goeben was never deployed on eastern front, so it is impossible they have "captured" a MN in battle.
Also there is inaccuracy in this picture.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngusBurgers In reply to XanderXVII [2010-05-15 21:45:03 +0000 UTC]

The captured guns were issued wherever they were needed as in 1915, the German army was beginning to run out of pretty much everything.

GeneraleRusso [2010-05-09 21:11:05 +0000 UTC]

HOLY, the first german is too tall even for the worst army! the soldier at his left looks like it has some strabism.
The russian rifle, i noticed right away, looks like they were refurbished from some russian battallion
Anyway i like the shadow effect you put on everything, is very natural, i bet its like midday

PS: why you draw lots of soldier with these "low shoulders"? looks like they are ill, not young, anyway the picture is great as everyone you have!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngusBurgers In reply to GeneraleRusso [2010-05-09 21:36:18 +0000 UTC]

I draw low shoulders on soldiers because I find it funny, it goes against all these propaganda posters with perfect men in them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GeneraleRusso In reply to AngusBurgers [2010-05-09 21:40:34 +0000 UTC]

yeah, now i understand that! these soldiers you draw remember me like random italian soldiers in WWII: small people, low shoulders, most of them have disease, bad equipment and most of them were among the italian resistance.
Propaganda was really functional back in the days, but looking at it now it really have force into the ignorance of the people!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngusBurgers In reply to GeneraleRusso [2010-05-09 21:43:08 +0000 UTC]

Exactly, and that's why I draw soldiers so cartoony, I do not want to glorify war.

i truly respect your line of thought.
i made a pair of drawings on funny "soviet-like propaganda andvert" but are crappy one, i'm not good at drawing in any method, but i have nice "stupid ideas"

Germans were called Huns because their silly helmets reminded of the Huns, east asian nomad tribe that had pointy hats too.

Your knowledge in history is sad.

Gotta say, though, the way you make every different character in your art unique is amazing. The facial expression, the positions and stances, some of the funny little details (the bent bayonet, wincing eye, etc.)
