The Wehrmacht weren't (all) nazis... The SS were well-known for war crimes, the Wehrmacht was the German 'normal' army that fought at the front. They didn't particularly join the Hitler youth, nor they were much aware of the plans of the nazis. They were just men who fought for their country, just like the Americans, French, British and Russian soldiers did.
Especially at the end of the war, many Wehrmacht soldiers started to hate the nazis.

"Unlike the American Army, the German Wehrmacht had a long standing professional officer corps"
Uh, West Point Military Academy was formed in 1802. That is more recent than the German military academies, indeed.
But still, having professional officers in the American forces wasn't exactly a thing from yesterday.
Imho.

I feel I must say this: it's a minor nitpick, but one that always gets me going:
the German ARMY of WWII was not called the Wehrmacht: that was the overarching term for the whole German MILITARY, army, navy and air force. the ARMY was called the Heer.
when you read about the German Command, the OKW, or OberKommadoWehrmacht, it consists of officers from all three branches. Wehrmacht seem to have just become a common term, likely due to mistranslation or misinterpretation on the Allied side.
but all in all, i can find no fault in the picture. it conveys well the heavy burden that the German soldiers had to shoulder, and a lot of 'what did we get ourselves into."

Because they were led by the most humane German commander during the war, Erwin Rommel.

I always like that you do a pairing or a trio when you draw the soldiers, I feel like it helps to show more facets of the fighters.
Also, you're drawings make me happy because I just got out of reading / watching / studying a million different sides of WWII.

Really like this one.
Although in your description, I should point out that it was the Waffen SS who committed the war crimes (at least the vast majority of them) and not the German Military (Whermacht). The WSS was never a part of the military, they were technically civilians under both international and German law.
All in all, a really god piece.

What with those Russians and their Lice-Warfare.

And don't forget, that they had the draft. There was no way to avoid being drafted. If you refused to serve, you have been executed. I think many soldiers weren't that enthusiastical to fight for Hitler.

It's nice to see that some people acknowledge the fact that the Wehrmacht wasn't completely evil... (the real nastiness was mainly due to the Waffen-SS becoming part of it and the Nazis replacing the old generals)

The Wehrmacht also looked an incredibly infinite amount of more brutal and badass than american soldiers altogether, except patton.
I mean just look at 'em, ahead of their time with the shaved heads and face, black and grey and darker greens that make them out to be monsters on the prowl. Also, have of them somehow made out to be grim looking fellows no matter what context you look at them in. Saving Private Ryan was loaded with either the majority of the Wehrmacht badass looking fellas or they just automatically looked like that.
and then there were the babyfaced youngling soldiers, who were ordered to look away from the camera.

I don't know if this was true but I heard that it was forbidden in the Wehrmacht for soldiers to shave their heads

PyjamaShark In reply to Ebenezar [2010-06-22 23:53:22 +0000 UTC]
Wehrmacht soldiers almost never had shaved hair. Saving Private Ryan just tried to make them look more evil there. Here's an example. [link]

prisoner-troops existet. They where thrown against the russians in mostly useless actions. There is a book about one of them, "Strafbataillon 999".
