I actually think Punz was a german princess and if I'm right the Frozen-Tangled-Little Mermaid theory fits perfectly.

I like the idea of Rapunzel being a cousin of Anna and Elsa. I'm just not sure about the Little Mermaid part. The ships do look alike, but I personally think Ariel would've lived (long) before the newest Disney girls. The fashion in TLM is all over the place, but Ariel's pink dress and the outfit of Eric's buddy (sorry, I've completely forgotten his name) remind me of fashions from before the Victorian Era (which most people believe to be the era of Frozen) or the time of Napoleon (which is where I would've placed Frozen). I thought Tangled could have taken place in the Renaissance, but I'm considering drawing Rapunzel in a similar outfit to Anna and Elsa ever since I found out they might be related. My choice for the Renaissance was also influenced by Gothel's outfit, but she'd been wearing that same dress for centuries

Yup, but Gothel live for hundreds of years before Rapunzel was born, thanks to the flower... Please draw Rapunzel in Napoleonic era

Italian dress, 16th century? Interesting: I'll tell you, I thought you would make a 18th century one, because in 18th-19th century the Grimm brothers gathered their fairy tales: but the tale isn't settled in a precise time, so its origins can be as ancient as we want: the time of the dress is good

aniek90 In reply to liliCartMan [2014-06-04 20:04:32 +0000 UTC]

A lot of Disney stories are based on the tales of the Grimms, so if I would focus on that I would have to draw a lot of the same dresses, which wouldn't be as much fun

I always thought Rapunzel took place around the same time as Snow White both being German tales and all, and Snow White was clearly 1500's. nice red for her.

aniek90 In reply to summerautumn [2014-02-22 21:54:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, that really depends on the things you put focus on. Disney likes to mix era's up pretty good. For instance, there is indeed stuff that would put Tangled in the late middle ages (like Gothel's dress), Elizabethan times (like Flynn's outfit) and lately they've been claiming that Rapunzel is a cousin of Anna and Elsa from Frozen, which could make the movie as modern as the Victorian era. There are many, MANY different historical interpretations of the Disney ladies here on Deviantart and I personally like that everyone has a different view on the movies. It would be quite boring if all of these artist drew Rapunzel in, for instance, early Renaissance dresses, wouldn't it? Glad you like the red, I found it much more suitable to Punzies brown hair than the pink

summerautumn In reply to aniek90 [2014-02-23 00:02:07 +0000 UTC]

It would be. And yes the red works better for rapunzel than pink. Doesn't Disney know that pink makes brunettes look blotchy? As for other brunettes I think Belle doesn't really have a pink dress her winter outfit is more reddish perhaps a wine color, and her Christmas dress was red so....... yeah brunettes and redheads shouldn't wear pink.

Nope, but little girls prefer the pink and they are the target audience.

DigitalGalleryPatron [2013-06-19 17:31:09 +0000 UTC]

Research has shown that the location of Corona is most likely Poland, if not Scandinavia. Plus, estimates find that Tangled must have taken place around 18-19th century. There are some items in the film that can help determine the era. For example, during the kingdom dance sequence, there is a shot of Rapunzel and Eugene in a bookstore or library examining an atlas. The atlas has both North and South America in the Western Hemisphere, so the film has to have been set much later than 1492 (Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue...).

What you say is true, but I must tell you that my series is not official or anything. I like to use places, colors and eras that I personally like and I need enough references. My work is my own interpretation of certain things, but that does not make it less historical.

vivoperlei [2013-04-08 07:21:56 +0000 UTC]

Rapunzel is German, but so is this dress! What you have there is what's usually referred to as a Cranach dress, circa 1530 or so. You get some Italian dresses that look similar, but without the wide horizontal front lacing and brustfleck, and those are circa 1500. So you chose the right dress for her nationality after all!

Loved! The gold and red in the gown are beautiful. I love the sleeves - what this style of sleeves are called? I always wanted to know!

I agree with the long hair - honestly, I prefer Rapunzel with long golden blonde, but brown in that pixie cut is unbearable - she looks like a hybrid of Dobby and Tonks! Ugh! It doesn't suit her face, what is not good considering that (at only for me) it's not the prettiest in a DP, with that Dobby eyes!

I love the headdress, what's the name? The necklace is a nice touch.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the names of the sleeves and head dress, I usually just call it Italian Renaissance style But yeah, the short hair is horrible! Flynn could at least have cut it a little lower!

Yes, but I think it would naturally grow again. Or she could use some hairpieces

HollyRoseBriar [2012-08-23 17:00:58 +0000 UTC]

Very nice! She reminds me strongly of Belle in this picture. Probably because she has longish brown hair instead of cut short brown hair and a red dress like Belle had in Enchanted Christmas. I can still tell she's Rapunzel, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aniek90 In reply to HollyRoseBriar [2012-08-24 13:08:05 +0000 UTC]

Haha yeah, but I figured Rapunzel would miss her long hair and grow it out, at least a bit. OR she used hairpieces, which have been used for centuries

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HollyRoseBriar In reply to aniek90 [2012-08-24 18:09:10 +0000 UTC]

Oh, of course. I think she would grow it out, too. At least a little. Unless she finds she really really likes it short.
