'The Key' layout acts as an aid towards understanding a current ongoing situation and what it entails. It can be used on a daily basis, however from experience I have found it to be far more meaningful when used at times of personal crisis. If the reading is to be done for someone other than yourself, then they must give you an overview of the situation concerned before commencing.

THE LAYOUT

Separate the trump cards (Major Arcana) from the Minor Arcana. The first two cards to be set down (A & B in the example) are chosen from the Minor Arcana by the reader:-

• CARD A (Significator): choose a court card that best describes the querent and their concerns, e.g. a man concerned about his state of health - he wants to know what would be his best course of action towards improving it = The King of Wands.
• CARD B (Pointer): choose a card that alludes to the area of concern, e.g. a period of recovery from illness = Four of Swords. Lay it beneath card A, partially covering it.

Note that either or both of these cards can be dropped from the layout if preferred as their main function is to focus you mentally (and the querent if other than yourself) on the given situation.

Set aside the remaining Minor Arcana cards then hand the trump cards (face down) to the querent. The querent must thoroughly shuffle the cards before returning them to the reader. Lay down the top three cards in positions 1,2 & 3 as shown in the example:-

• CARD 2 (Illuminator): this card reveals the current situation for what it really is. The Clarifiers (cards 1 & 3) are contributing aspects of this card and need to be carefully considered when evaluating the Illuminator.
• CARD 1 (Clarifier - past influence): a contributing aspect of the Illuminator - shows how or what past events are influencing the present situation.
• CARD 3 (Clarifier - future influence): a contributing aspect of the Illuminator - shows how or what future events are influencing the present situation.

After the cards have been evaluated and interpreted to the querent's satisfaction, hand the querent the remaining trump cards (face down). Ask the querent to shuffle them whilst keeping all they have learned so far in mind, along with any doubts or queries that have arisen from the reading; tell them to continue shuffling until they come upon one card that seems to 'feel right' - this they hand to the reader. Lay the card in position 4 (beneath card 2, partially covering it):-

• CARD 4 (The Key): this card will offer advise to the querent as to their best course of action regarding the current situation. Great care must exercised when interpreting the card, as a difficult card, such as The Devil, may well be a warning - especially when the Illuminator and/or the future Clarifier are also difficult. Always take all three of the other trump cards into careful consideration before assigning a meaning.
