Description This was meant to be released a few days after seeing the movie, but I later turned this into a school project. The assignment was to create three posters with similar themes (in my case, three movies I watched this year with a Loud sister taking center stage), and this was the first one I made. Expect the other two to be released later this month.

On August 29, 2019, I saw the 2017 psychological horror film A Cure for Wellness. There were two things that motivated me to check this film: the facts that this film was directed by Gore Verbinski, known for directing the Pirates of the Caribbean films and the 2011 Best Animated Feature winner Rango, and that it's trailer was really captivating with the melancholy tune and stunning cinematography. After seeing it,let's just say that my thoughts on this film are... complicated.

This film feels a lot like my viewing experience with 2010's Black Swan (which I watched not too long ago): it has an interesting premise, but it is challenging to watch because it makes me wince in pain so many times throughout that I kind of lost the feeling in my fingers and legs. However, unlike Black Swan where the realism of the characters made their pain harder to watch, the horror tone in this film feels more grounded, as it has lore and the pain the characters are going through are from the fact that they're all brainwashed. Speaking of the lore, it was so complex in this film, that keeping track of everything kind of hindered my enjoyment of the film, as you need to have a good understanding of what it is in order to have a basic idea of what's happening. With those out of the way, I can say that I like this film for a few reasons. First, the premise of this film is quite interesting. A business employee is told by the higher-ups of the company he works with to retrieve the CEO from a wellness center in the Swiss Alps, only to fall victim to the center's dark secret. Second, this film actually knows how to utilize its buildup. There are a few scenes here and there that look like they drag out, but when you see the jumpscare that comes afterward, the buildup of suspense actually feels warranted. This is mainly because the film often goes back and forth into what's real or a hallucination by the main character. Lastly, I highly enjoyed the final fight between the main character and the antagonist. The battle was pretty captivating to watch and the payoff of how it ends was really satisfying. So in the end, I did enjoy this film, but the lore behind the story was so complicated that it honestly kind of hinders my ability to watch it. Maybe one of these days, I'll watch it again to get a better understanding, but for now, I enjoy the film for what it is.

This poster, in my opinion, was the one that called for the most attention to detail. I had to make sure all of the elements featured were layered properly and that it closely resembles original poster I based it on. Two of the most challenging things to make were the clouds and the underwater rocks. I managed to make those two things with a couple brushes I never tried before, and they worked surprisingly well because of the texture they create. In order to make the silhouette of the lab, I used the select tool to draw a rectangle around the lab, used the move tool to subtract all the negative space (the empty space), leaving only the lab highlighted, added a new layer and used the selected area to draw completely back, and slightly made it transparent so that it's visible from the sunlight. Speaking of the sun, I had to experiment a few times with the gradient tool just to get it right. In the end, I say that of the three posters I made for my art class, this is the one I'm most proud of, as I just appreciate the amount of effort I put into it.
