Description Description taken from Grade 12 end of year Art Proposal:

This is a portrait of a character named Kaworu from the animé known as Neon Genesis Evangelion. Because this was supposed to be a portrait describing my reaction to the world, I wanted to paint a character that I wish to become, which was Kaworu. In Evangelion, Kaworu is an outsider trying to learn more about the Earth and it’s inhabitants, the human race. He is a very kind person who has a mysterious aura around him. He’s still basically a stranger to all his friends, and because he’s so different, Kaworu might as well be a stranger forever. I wanted to share this feeling of not knowing someone, but still being comfortable with him or her, to everyone. This portrays a more pleasant and secure state of mind.

The background was simply made to aid in bringing out the image of the portrait. There was no emphasis or anything in the beginning. My previous painting had only the image, however seemed dull and lacking an element that could bring the painting together as a whole. It was suggested that I use colours, so to experiment with something new, I used watered down Acrylic paint on individually cut pieces of canvas always glued on a board. The paint created a pleasant water effect that doesn’t draw attention away from the portrait.

This works gives different points of view to different people, which are accepted because of the nature of my theme. For example, often the squares are said to be bricks, and Kaworu as myself. Though neither of these is true, at least this way the viewer can find his or her own meaning in the painting.
