When I looked up and saw the dark clouds slowly rolling toward the country side I knew I had to get home, and quick! A big storm was rolling in, and I had to get home before the clouds decided to open up and drench everyone and everything in their path. Oh god, I thought as the first raindrop followed by many of its brothers and sisters hit my windshield. Come on you damned light, change already, CHANGE, I thought, as if just because I was in a hurry it would have any consideration for me, I mean it was just a timed light that was doing its job... Finally! I shoved my foot on the gas, but had to remind myself that it wouldn't do me any good to rush home if I was to never GET home. After about 15 more grueling minutes, I was pulling into the driveway and breathing a sigh of relief when I saw that the lights were still on in the house. My relief was short lived when the flood gates finally decided to open, followed by the loudest thunder that I have ever heard. Shit, shit, shit, was the chant going on in my mind as I lurched myself out of the car and to the front door...

"Linds?... Lindsay, where are you?"

"I'm in he-here babe."

I followed the sound of the small, shaky voice into the living room and my heart couldn't help but get that warm, fuzzy feeling when you see something cute. There was Lindsay, in all her glory, curled up on the couch underneath a blanket. There was another enormous boom of thunder so big that it made the floor vibrate, but it also made Lindsay release a little squeak of fright.

"Em, I-I'm so glad tha-that you're home," she tried to tell me while putting on the bravest smile she could muster.

I couldn't help but let the slightest chuckle escape my lips at the bravery she was trying to portray when it was obvious that she was scared out of her mind. "Babe," I told her as I made my way over to the couch, "you know that you don't have to be brave for me... Come here," I said as I patted the space next to me on the couch. She immediately moved closer to me, quicker than I had seen anyone move before, and arranged herself to be as close to my side as possible. I had my body slightly rotated to the right and my back to the arm of the couch, as I wrapped my right arm securely around her waist.

"You weren't kidding when you said that you are still afraid of thunderstorms," I said as I looked down into her frantic green eyes.

"No I wasn't Em... Still very, VERY afraid of them," she said as she lowered her head and snuggled into the crook of my neck.

In the past 25 minutes the storm has only gotten stronger, increasing the fear that Lindsay was feeling. Not only was the thunder so loud that it would make the windows shake, but now there was also constant flashes of lightning. Lindsay had tried to move even closer to me and I swear that if anyone tried to put a hair between us, they would be unsuccessful. Shit, and I thought things couldn't get any worse, was the thought in my mind when I felt Lindsay's grip on my shirt tightened and her body begin to shake.

"The li-lights are gone," she wailed, only proving to me how wrong my thoughts had been.

"I know babe, but it's alright, I got you and I'm not going to go anywhere," I told her as I brought my hand up to cup her face and slowly stroked her cheek with my thumb.

"Promise?"

"I promise," I said and then sealed the promise with a gentle kiss to her lips.

She let the remaining air from her lungs flow past her lips before she opened her eyes again. When I looked into her eyes I still saw the fear there, but behind that fear was complete love and trust from me. I put my right hand on her back, my left hand under both her legs, and I gently lifted her up and settled her into my lap. I leaned my body back into the cushion and the arm of the couch before wrapping both my arms around her waist as her face was once again in the crook of my neck. I knew that it would be a while before the storm subsided. But I was content just sitting here, in the storm, with my arms around Lindsay while I stroked her silky red hair, and occasionally kissed the crown of her head while mumbling sweet nothings into her ear.
