Relations: Son of Kutesa, Hawezi; mate to Pointi, Jichovivu

Kutesa has Adhabu after a tryst with Hawezi, a Sun Pride border guard. The cub is is born around the same time the other Outlander cubs are, but since he is male he is decreed to die, as Zira will not allow any competition for her son Nuka. Normally Kutesa would just kill the little cub without a blink -- its what she does, and she is loyal to Zira -- but as she goes to smother him, he opens his little eyes and smiles at her. Kutesa has NEVER had anyone smile at her, or be happy to see her, or even love her, and this baby does, right from birth, he truly does. And Kutesa just can’t do it. She can’t kill her son, the one creature who can look at her without loathing and hatred. So she takes the baby back to his father and then tells Zira that the child was stillborn. Zira buys her story because, as she knows, Kutesa is nothing but loyal.

Meanwhile, Hawezi brings his son back to the Sun Pride where the cub is left to be raised by the Pridesisters. Adhabu grows up happy and healthy. He’s a friendly and warmhearted cub, often with a song and an infectious smile. Despite the occasional snobby rumor aimed his darker pelt, he is well liked and has many friends. His world is turned upside down when he hits his teenage years and is bluntly told he is to be a border guard on the outskirts of the kingdom. For the first time in his life Adhabu feels anything but happy. Why does he have to leave his friends? Did he do something wrong? He’s always had an idea that his situation was different than everyone else’s, but this doesn’t seem fair!

By the time he’s placed on the border Adhabu’s mood is downright thunderous. Even in a matter of minutes he’s left feeling more alone than he’s ever felt before, at least until his assigned mentor finally shows up… And it takes only a few seconds for the young lion to connect the dots. He’s heard enough whisperings among his caregivers that his father was a guard and no other Sun Pride lion he’s seen has a mane as light as his own, and judging from the look on the older lion’s face he’s dead on.

Not one to hold back, Adhabu takes the first step. ”Hello!” That earns him a confused blink, “it’s really good to meet you!”

Hawezi is taken aback at first, baffled at his estranged son’s forwardness, but it’s a start. After weeks of training (and constant pestering), months of advising (and youthful recklessness), and years of border patrolling (‘father-son bonding’, Adhabu calls it) they manage to find some joy in each other’s company. Hawezi occasionally makes an effort to humor his son’s questions from time to time, particularly regarding his origins…

“No, you don’t look odd, you just take after your mother that’s all.”
“Yes, I’m sure she cared, you wouldn’t even be here if she didn’t…”
“No, she was not a Shard lioness, thank-you-very-much! Where did that come from!?”
”Yes it’s an odd name, but it’s as good as any. And Stars know you can make my head hurt!”

The questions eventually stop and the years pass by, but Adhabu still wonders… Deep down, he knows he’s not happy with where he is. He enjoys his dad’s company, but he misses real Pride-life and as long as he’s with the Sun Pride his situation is unlikely to change. He could go rogue… travel for a bit, meet other lions. And his father had mentioned his mother came from down east… It might be worth a look. But before he can make a real decision, Adhabu catches the scent of intruders.

Oh well, duty calls.

Tracking them yields more info; three foreign lionesses, two young, one old, tracks suggest they’re tired and slow. Shouldn’t be too hard to deal with. Adhabu speeds down a marked shortcut, turning around ahead to cut them off and face them. Maybe he could take a peaceful approach, no real harm in diplomacy after all-

And it’s her. There’s no way it’s not her. Save for a few greyed lines and lack of a mane he might as well be looking at his own reflection. Somewhere beyond her the two other lionesses are staring, but Adhabu can’t bring himself to care because that’s all he can do, transfixed by the old lioness, who looks just as poleaxed as he feels.

And somewhere, through the shock and confusion, Adhabu remembers his manners.

“Hello” and his mother blinks at him and he cannot stop smiling.

“It’s really good to meet you.”

Man, this guy turned out to be a real headache! “Pain” and “Torment” indeed! XS
That’s not the kind of guy he is though. He’s a friendly, happy guy who likes making other people happy, not one to let things get him down for long. He’d be one of those characters who leads the occasional musical number!

Quite a far cry from his Outlander roots, but it might be a good thing.

He’s still a tried and tested border guard mind you. Behind that sweet face and gentlemanly manners he’s packing one mean left claw.
