I see a huge security issue here:
Seems the officers forgot to shackle the prisoners this morning. The might use the moment when the officer is not looking and just run off.
Will be kind of a hassle to take them back in.

maybe they are in a secured perimeter so they can't escape

Either way is presents unpredictable risks for the officers, if the prisoners are not shackled properly. It would be a good deal of work going after them if they decide not to follow the orders but run around on the perimeter or even try to kick the officers. There is far less hassle with that when they are put in shackles.
Also they should be constantly reminded, that they are not residing in a summer holiday camp but serve prison sentences as punishment for crimes and serious wrongdoings they commited when they were living in freedom. Shackles around the ankles are always a good memento and reminder for the mistakes and bad choices a prisoner has made before.

Yeah, shackles would have been appropriate. Of course, surrounded by swampland, they probably would be afraid to make a break for it anyway-- too many snakes and alligators.

Who doesn't? But your skills are obvious: your use of perspective, colouring, composition and the facial expressions of your characters are very good. And last but not leastl, you have style of your own, that's harder to get.

well done - such various emotions and reactions because of the hard labour - the one all to the left looks really dangerous ... so grim-faced ... I'm concerned about the nice guard - maybe she should put her in shackles - well, the next one really is a drama queen ... so why not? - I bet her show is often successful - the shorthaired girl probably tries to ignore her reluctance ... maybe working is the best distraction - my personal favourite is the girl all to the right ... she is desperate - maybe discouraged but most of all very cute

I love how the guard is clearly getting such satisfaction over their obvious misery. Also, the prisoner with her hand on her head looks like a drama queen, unlike her friends who are genuinely unhappy.

The guard might just have a sadistic streak, and perhaps takes pleasure from exacting corporal punishment when the occasion arises.

i feel really bad for them though , making them spread all that manure and fertilizer in a hot summer day like that... the heat , the smell , the physical labor itself and on top of that being barefoot surly makes this the worst situation they've been in up until now

Flies can be a real pest even when just out exercising. I bet they are hell in a situation like this.

Very true. The expression "like flies on a horse turd" had to originate somewhere. And bites from horseflies can be very painful. Horses at lats have tails to sweep the flies from their backsides, but what of our poor cons?

I think that this is the first time they have ever seemed to be really angry about their situation. I can't say I blame them because this is just plain nasty work whereas usually they're just doing hard work.

indeed , for this piece i tried putting them in a much worse scenario
i mean it's not only the hard work but it's also the heat and the smell that makes this situation a whole lot difficult for them

I feel bad for them too. They've already put in a lot of work to pay for their crime, but with the work getting more and more distasteful I am sure it all feels very unfair.
